Molly-guard is what the cover over the BRS (big red switch) is called in mainframe days. So named after for a computer scientist's daughter named Molly.
We used to have a big red switch by the exit in the VAX machine room. I don’t think that it was ever used but I always worried about loosing files so I would save often. When I was writing/editing important documents, I would save them onto external disks every fifteen minutes or so. Backups are good. People take automatic backups for granted now.
I have switches like this on machines to turn them off in an emergency.

When someone pushes the computer room big red switch, the emergency fire system goes off. This is when a mainframe, its contents, and job, are considered more important than the people who run it. That alarm means the computer room is going to be uninhabitable by carbon-based beings in seconds.
