*SIGH* Got called in to work 4 hours early again tonight. That's the second time in 3 days. COVID cases popping up in my department and people are calling out sick right and left. It ain't easy being essential AND old...
Back when I was employed, each of our names came up every five weeks on the on-call pager schedule. IT department for a local government agency. It wasn't horrible, in that just for carrying it, we got an hour of comp time on weekdays, two on weekend days and holidays. So, nine hours a week even if it doesn't beep. If we had to answer a page by phone after normal work hours that was an additional half-hour of comp. If we had to go to a site after hours it was a minimum of four hours of callback comp time, even if it only took 15 minutes to fix. But I sure couldn't have gotten on the outside of as much scotch as I did tonight if I were carrying that thing.

A possibility of a special bonus round of surgery on my foot is as yet determined. Two weeks, and we'll see. Two more weeks booting about ....

My beeper was 24x7 and in my view if someone were in enough trouble that they had to call me, that's a lot of trouble.

I was out in my car this morning, the day after halloween. The car’s system tells me that there’s a software update. I clicked on install. A notice comes up saying that the vehicle will be disabled for 15 minutes.

While performing the update, a black cat walked in-front of the vehicle. It’s version 6.66! The car runs but the update display screen won’t go away.

I am delighted to say the only ways our cars can be "updated" is with a wrench.

If an adjustment comes to pass, I hope that it’s covered by the original warranty.

Yes she told me exactly that in doctor words.

What I wound up doing was sleep with my beeper on the bedside table. That changes your life a bit right there. These are of course pre-cell phone days. When the beeper goes off, the hotel phone goes off next.

Here in the future I feel free to sort urgent messages in order of urgency. The hour may or may not play into how I decide to handle something. The net difference is under corporate I paid the monthly beeper bill out of my own credit card, and submitted the expense report to be repaid [soon]. Now I just pay the full monthly cell phone bill myself end of story

Beepers had a very rude annunciation, especially when it goes off right beside your head. At least phones can be tamed.
Beepers stayed in the kitchen back then, as my cell phone does now. Sometimes I hear it ring from whatever part of the house I may be in, but never do I go to look at it right away. Rarely does email cause me great urgency. Now that I'm no longer employed, all that stuff only has the meaning that I deign to give it at any particular moment.

My cell phone makes a good alarm clock. Otherwise it doesn’t get used.

My expectation is the beeper sound was engineered for Type A personalities. Getting beeped in front of other people means superiority rituals take place on the spot. An entire social art form evolved from beepers. Now, personally, I don't ever recall smiling when I got beeped. Maybe I wasn't playing the game as designed.

*SIGH* Yet ANOTHER positive covid test in my department as well as one of my closer co-workers calling out because of symptoms. That's 5 positives in the last week and a half. What does this mean to me, Mr. Essential? Already asked to come in 4 hours early Monday night and no night off this weekend...I'm too old for this s***!:bawl::rollno:
