getting 1st head/cab setup tommorow ???

hey tb,

I just got back into playing bass about a month or two ago after quiting about 10 years ago when I was around 17. Anyways, I found a behringer bx4500 head and ultrabass 410 cab for sale locally through craigslist fo $450 neg. down to $400. What should I look/test for when picking it up?

You should look for someone to talk you out of it. Seriously. You can do better than that for not much more money, or even the same or less money. Keep looking.

ok, I haven't fully commited to buying it so, I just thought I would throw it out there and see what you guys think. I don't really have any bassist friends since I have been out of the "scene" for a while now.

I love that head, and the cab sounds good, but is too heavy. But for the price, I'd pass. You should be able to get that head used for around $150, and a better used cab for $150-200 easily. But if you can get him down another $100, it's be a very good combo.

Hi jmill.

One approach to ensuring that a new rig will be right for you, would be to rent a combo to help get your playing & bass ears back in shape while you take your time trying out as many new bass amps as possible.

With the confluence of technologies like lightweight (and high powered) SMPS/Class D amps, neodymium speakers, and to an increasing degree, enclosure designs which flow from the world of pro audio, the array of wonderful new rigs which are now available is truly amazing.
