Getting a cat this weekend!

I litter box trained my cat in one day by showing him where the litter box was. when he stepped inside it I gave him a treat and when he peed in it I gave him a treat.
although he picked it up extremely fast and has never had an accident, I don't think that is normal for a cat. he was adopted from a guy I know who had a bunch of kittens show up at his farm house, so I think the kitty was used to burying his poop to avoid predators.
get some toys and a scratching post too.

Get a tabby, they're smarter than dogs. They even know their names. I'll tell you some funny stories about tabbies later.
Be around them and handle them as much as possible, they will be more friendly with you as they get used to you, and less likely to attack.
This will sound kinda odd but I always groom my kittens like thier momma would............with my tongue!!!!!

and get it used to having it claws trimmed early. it is much easier to do when they are cooperative.

One of my best friends was a cat.We shared a bond no one else did.No matter who feeds her,at the end of the night we were in the streets hugging each other for more then 10 years.She came to our neighbourhood as a little kitten and turned out to be an old fart here.We grew up together.
Whenever I was down,drunk,she used to come out of the shadows and hug me,sleep in my arms...She passed away a few months ago,we never found the old girl,after all its the cat way...
But I tell you what,I never ever licked her.
I just took in a cat last week... It was going to be taken to a shelter on Saturday if no one took it in
We got a cat for my 5 year old daughter a couple months back. He went from an efficiency apartment with a college girl roommate to a middle class split level with a 3 and 5 year old chasing him all the time. He scratched at first, but now if he wants attention he knows he'll get handled awkwardly by the kids so he just kind of takes it. 
I gotta say, if you have a real good pet that fits with your family, it's great. If not, it's such a PITA. My sister had a Siamese cat that would literally wait for people and sneak up behind them and bite them.
He got tapped on the nose pretty good when he did that to mine and hasn't gone near it since.

Cats can be aloof. They are more independent than dogs. Male cat seem dumber than a bag of hammers, the fems can be bitchy. They are at their best when they find a lifestyle that suits them and you. They sleep more than any other household pet I've ever known.
They are badaXX predators to anything smaller than themselves, and hide from anything of equal or large size. I had a ranch cat, transplanted to the city who would jump 3 feet straight up and catch wine corks that I would toss with all four paws in the center of her belly. Amazing athlete!
