Getting a harsh harmonic sound with slapping

I'm guessing its the strings - I recently put on a set of DRs. Its on a Geddy Lee Jazz with SD Quarter Pounders. I can't get the harsh, harmonic sound out unless I dial the tone way off on the bass.

I'm guessing its the strings but even the previous strings (Rotos) had a bit of the same problem. Any thoughts/suggestions?

Sounds like a technique issue. Please describe. I had a problem with noise when I was slapping last Sunday, and I think it was caused by hitting the pickups. In your case, are you slapping right on the harmonic point?

I don't think that's it. I've tried moving where I strike around. Toward the base of the neck (where I normally strike), and then various positions further back. Still that harsh harmonic sound.

A little experiment might be to lower the pickups. See if the offending noise stops. I had this problem, and it was also the hitting the pickups thing.
