Getting a High End Bass...can't decide which.

i know that this may be too pricey. bbuuuttttttt......have you tryed the warwick NT thumb. amazing sound and weight (IMO). but its around NZ$6300. and it might be too mondern toned. but i do still say you should try it out at your local shop if you can.

I think your best bet would be to find every instrument shop within a set radius of your house, and just hit each and every one until you find "The One." Maybe it is a Fodera, maybe it is a Sadowsky, maybe it is a Fender, maybe it is one of those Squiers that are supposedly better than a Fodera. You never know until you try.

I guess I wasn't much help at all...

My god, I just looked at his profile....:o

You said it! Obviously the information is flowing the wrong direction here.

Hey, pOK, based on your bass experience, please tell us which bass is the "best"!

Personally I don't get it. You've owned an Ibanez GSR200 and you are STILL looking for a new bass? Well, OK, maybe a GSR206 like mine, but not much else...

If you can justify putting down three to five grand for a Sadowsky, then more power to ya. Personally, I can't. I know Roger personally, and he's a great guy who makes a fine product. But I've just never understood the mindset that puts a Sadowsky in the same category as a Fodera, or an MTD, or an F Bass.

Really? I'd be interested in hearing more. I'm playing a NYC Will Lee right now, have been for about 2 years. However. I'm not a Sadowsky evangelist by any means. It is what it is.

So do you mean that in terms of value for money, you can't see how an NYC Will Lee compares to a Fodera YYS?
I have found the play ability and customer service of Sadowsky to be better than Fender...but that's just me.
You mentioned that you're into 'vintage tone'. As I just mentioned, I have an NYC Will Lee and it's been my main player for a while. The reason guys buy these basses, as far as I understand it, is that they want a Jazz bass with way better consistency, build quality, choice of configuration and customer service. I wouldn't exactly call the tones I get out of the Will Lee 'vintage'. More like 'contemporary Jazz'. I play mine with the Vintage Tone Control engaged, but it doesn't sound like the '60s Jazz basses I've played. In my view, if you want vintage tone, you need a vintage instrument, and if you have 5K to spend, you can shop around and find one that suits you.

i'd buy a boat and go fishing!:hyper:

Bass fishing? :ninja:

Everyone will have an opin on this. Roscoes, Fbass, Fodera, etc...all superb instruments. The Fbass' (typically) have wider string spacing, so beware if that's an issue. But...if you really dig the Fenders and want something special, you might look for an American Fender Zone Deluxe. Pretty rare bass. These puppies are hotrodded active jazzes that kill!! There's one on Ebay right now.

With that much money? I don't know what a luthier would charge but is a custom job out of the question?

Personally, if I had that much cash/credit to burn, I'd go to Warmoth's site and build something from the ground on up. That way I'd have a say in just about every aspect of it's design and looks (wood, body type, neck, pickup configuration, electronics, etc…).

looks like youve had both versions of the F bass vf5. what didnt work about those basses? those are some of the best jazzes out there.

The Alder/Rosewood one I had just didn't do it for me for some reason...I think it had a grounding/shielding issue or something and I would get hum when not touching strings...I'm sure I could have gotten it fixed but I didn't LOVE the tone enough to bother with it.

The Ash/Maple one definitely sounded good, but something about the neck didn't feel right to me...and I think I just like the more traditional "look" of the sadowsky/fender/alleva, etc... basses better. So the Fbasses were great, I just didn't bond with either of the ones I had.
