Getting a new bass, suggestions?

Looks are the least important thing to a musician. For me the two factor are playability, then sound. Sound becasue I know I can tweak the instrument to get the sound i want. Then how tight the fit is of all the parts. If a instrument looks good that is a fringe benefit, not a requirement.

You could do with elaborating a bit more - like telling us what kind of basses you like, what sound you are after, what styles you like to play etc.

In that price range I would either go second hand as you could pick up something decent, or try to find a bass with great feel ie, a body and neck that you really like and upgrade the pick ups. I did this with an Ibanez SR800, I put EMG's in it and it's a fantastic bass.

Hope this helps.
