Getting beautiful custom 5-string '51 P-bass built

Wow! Great figuring in that maple.

I have to say, I had a popular TB luthier make me a bass with a birdseye fretboard, and his price list included one charge for "regular" birdseye and a higher charge for "extra fancy" birdseye. I made it clear that if I was going to pay a premium price, I would expect to get a really nice looking board. Well, he charged me the premium price and gave me a frankly "blah" piece of wood.

Nice to see Regenerate isn't like that!

Rod's goal was to tow the line between attractive and gawdy. Where the bass has the real shell inlays on it we wanted to try to keep it somewhat balanced if that makes sense. The body's painted now also in the planned brilliant metal flake white, but I'll hold off on photo's of that until pickguard and pickups are in place and such.

I was initially not all that enthused on this one based off of the mockup, but I lurked around out of curiosity. I was really warming up to it and understandingthe appeal. Then I saw this photo. Now I officially love this bass. Congrats

My bass was shipped today. Arrives here in Tennessee on Thursday afternoon.

I'll gig it out at a 4-hour bar gig on Saturday night. My first gig with this new band actually... 4-hours... no practices before hand... band filled with music city pro's, and me of course... Gotta love it.

here's where stflbn is sleepless the next three nights anticipating the delivery of his new baby ... and where I hold my breath for the next 3-1/2 days, waiting anxiously to hear whether I correctly interpreted everything in all of our e-mail exchanges these past months, captured and produced all of the details and nuances stflbn was expecting, and find out if I got the tone and feel on target with what was hoped for ....

that's a killer bass that I would have been all too happy to have kept in my personal collection

And my custom bass is now safely in my hands here in Tennessee. FedEx actually delivered it a day early.

Not having plugged it in...

- Beautiful finish. Very fine metallic white finish that should have a very nice sheen on stage. Just different enough in color from the pearloid pickguard that the pickguard still stands out in the typical '51P fashion.

- The neck feels very good. Not as narrow and thin as my Schecter, but definitely not any form of a baseball bat. Very comfortable for me to play.

- This is a light bass for a 5-string. I'll report with the actual weight.

- No apparent neck-dive at all which was a concern for me for a 5-string with a long in-line 5 headstock design.

- The end result is VERY close to my mockup I provided Rod at Regenerate. Other than the fact that my final bass has WAY more knobs on a longer control plate.


Cannot wait to plug it in tonight and start finding what tone's are natural to it and what other tones I can tweak out of it.

I had him string it with DR Sunbeams. So initially these will be a bit bright for my taste, but they tame down quick.
