Getting gigs

Ok, listen up, I am not shy when playing at all. I love it. I rock it every sunday at church in front of three services. I guess don't know how to talk to people when it comes to getting into bands. But I guess that's just me. Also, I simply don't want to do an open jam. I want to be in a band that has rehearsals, and gets to play once in a while. Is that too much to ask? I don't want to noodle around with people I don't know. By the way, I still live 40 mins from LA, so its no cakewalk to just go out there and play.So if I did meet people to play with at an open jam and manage to join their band, I would still be to far away to make rehearsals with them.

As for college groups, I have been in them and they are horrible. It's constant competition and you can never make friends with people you compete with.

I love to play any kind of music though. Guess what else? I would do it all for FREE!! It's the joy of playing that makes me happy, not money. I also constantly scour craigslist for gigs, but there is nothing that ever works for me. Another thing about LA is that your looks are more important for a band than your skills.(And I don't have the look).

By the way ggun my talkbass name is just a joke, don't take it so seriously....

I am not afraid of rejection, I never said that. And how do you expect me to go up to a club owner and ask for a gig when there is no band? I just don't understand that.

Anyway, thats all I have to say for now.

You're are making excuses. It's pretty sad. I used to live in a crappier part of LA county and always found gigs. Some were good; some were not so good.

If you can't talk to people, it sounds like you have a bigger issue beyond playing bass. Promoting yourself requires some form of communication.

That's your problem. You have to get out there and take a risk. Enthusiasm and desire will usually beat out ability. I've had bad showings and good ones. It's okay to bomb. Just dust yourself off and move on. I also find that most of the time, gigs that don't work out are usually blessings in disguise.

Good luck and keep us posted!

My ability stagnated for a few years because I WASN'T in a band. As soon as I joined my first band, my ability grew at an exponential rate. You learn far more jamming with other people than just sitting at home noodling...

Check out your Craiglist, I'm sure theres SOMETHING there for you. There certainly is where I live!
