Getting hurt in other activities (fear of)...

I get that injuries and accidents happen all the time, and can happen anywhere - but I think the likelihood of those injuries raises dramatically if one chooses to play in traffic as opposed to in their backyard.

Not sayin we should live in constant fear, bubble wrap ourselves and not experience things, but the more risks we take, the more chance there is of us being injured.

I'm an obsessive recreational road cyclist. I "play in traffic" all the time. I understand there is risk involved, and I know how to gauge my personal risk-tolerance, and so long as I'm under that threshold I'm totally chill. Yep, there's a chance of injury that could threaten my bass playing.

But here's the thing: Before I became an obsessive recreational road cyclist, I didn't do dookie in terms of exercise or physical activity other than hump my gear in & out of venues and occasionally play the drums. I spent all my time in dark recording studios or concert halls, sitting on my azz or standing around, eating crap road food...iow, living the typical life of a freelance musician. Does anyone honestly believe that lifestyle is "safe" or "healthy"? Talk about "risk" ...hello heart attack, diabetes, sleep deprivation, liver disease, vitamin D deficiency...

So I figure any/all risk that I might undertake by riding a bicycle in traffic is more than outweighed by the health benefits of all the aerobic exercise, fresh air, & sunshine I'm getting riding that very bicycle!

So , i posted on the first page of this thread about getting past an injury and moving on , something about not letting life get in your way. Time now to follow my own advice. Crashed my wifes motorcycle yesterday and broke two bones in my left hand. Found a sub for the next few gigs and the bandleader says he wont take any more till I get back. Probably going to be in a cast for about 4 to 6 weeks. Work will be a problem as I work construction and need two hands for just about everything I do. They can have me do light duty stuff in the shop but I won't be making the big piecework bucks , just hourly stuff. Better than nothing.
So a little setback and then move onward. And yes ,I will be riding the bike again.

So, Ive seen a couple other motorcycle road racers on here by profile photos. I road race, its a dangerous sport. Frequent injuries to the wrists, fingers and shoulders. It goes through my head, occasionally that it could have negative impacts on my playing ability if I sustain injuries doing it. I race more conservatively because of it. I raced motocross and enduros as well, and got banged up pretty good doing that. Any other racers on here and even just in general have activities that you do that put you at risk of injuries that you worry about and if so, what do you do about it?
I practice Brazilian jiu jitsu. Injury is part of the game. Jammed thumbs, sore arms, sore everything...

Ah yes... I used to enjoy watching Royce Gracie at work. It was not much to watch... 30 seconds of circling around... 10-15 minutes with both contestants seemingly bound up together in a motionless ball on the mat... then the other guy tapping out. But it was beautiful nonetheless.
