getting into an argument with bassist

Recently buy an app for iphone from Fonexsis dedicated to two-handed chords - JimPavloff.com - Two Handed Touch Guitar Chords for iPhone/iPod - and in my opinion it can be totally used by bass players (if has 6 strings of course)), but my friend bass player says that on bass this chords sounds different way than on guitar. So, i wondering if it depend on taste or really to be adopted another way for bass?

On a 6 banger (note: eadgbe-tuning), the chords are exactly the same, 1 octave lower.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Generally true, but many do tune EADGBE or any number of combos. My 6er is BEADGC but one can tune to w/e floats their boat.

"Standard" tuning for 6-string is B E A D G C... if you make an app for the general public you should probably state that you'd need to tune the bass to E A D G B E in order for it to work.

Maybe the app has alternate tunings?....seems like in today's world, it should.

Yup. Unless you use the standard 6 string tuning (BEADGC). Those chord shapes will have a drastically different sound because the intervals would be structured for a different tuning.

Easy example:
one Gmaj shape on a "banger" (EADGBE)
GBDGDG (root, maj3rd, 5th, root, 5th, root)

One Gmaj shape on a "standard tuned 6string bass" (BEADGC)
D F# A D Bb D# (5th, maj7th, 2nd, 5th, min3rd, aug5th)

... In other words it's gonna sound pretty terrible for some chords. Especially when you start getting into more "complex" 2 hand chords (sometimes much more dissonant, fewer 'perfect' intervals, multiple octave jumps, etc...)

Assuming that when you type 'chord' you mean that they are sounded together, some of them (especially in the lower register of the instrument) may not be very easy to hear. If you're using them as scale patterns, different story.

It depends how you attack the notes with your plucking hand.

If you do a nice gentle stroke very close to the bridge (1" - 2"), you can make even an open E chord sound pretty nice. (possibly use a pick). (barred D chord actually sounds wonderful on my 5ver (missing 2 highest notes of chord, B string muted) nice and growly.

Different basses will differ in this sound...(best on brighter basses)

Generally speaking for bass, octaves sound better than fifths, which sound better than thirds, etc., especially in the lower registers. Complex chords on bass in the lower registers just sound like muddy noise to my ears.

Again...that would depend on the bass and the bassist, I've heard bassists make them sound great.

simply had an idea me and my bassist to start practicing with accordance of those fonexsis' apps for guitars, but it seems for bass it should be adopted quite another way, 'll try )). Any case, hope they 'll issue an app for bass players in future)

Traditional open guitar voicings usually sound like crap on bass, regardless of how defined your tone or good your strings.

There are, of course, exceptions.

it would work, the chords would all just be a 4th lower...

ime, sometimes chords that work on guitar just don't work on bass, especially the more dissonant ones, all you get is a weird muddy sound that'll shake everything off your walls
