Lots of people complain about getting old. How it takes away from you. It also gives some things.
I recently started thinking about what is good about getting old. It surprised me how I could go on and on,
so I just stopped here.
Senior discounts (except where it counts like music stores).
Medicare.
I Have accepted that I can't physically go back to work and thats ok, I am no longer expected to.
Most of my time is actually mine. I can fill it up with more things of my choice than I can finish.
I can keep a fourty year old car. If it won't start in the morning, thats ok.
Not driving to work at ten degrees in the snow with other traffic. I find it great fun listening to the morning traffic report.
The speed limit is ok with me.
Don't need the weather report. Looking up at the sky tells me all I need to know.
I have seen the same trends come around five times at least so I know what to expect next.
People are in awe that I am fluent in vacuum tubes.
I can play something "old" like from the british invasion and people don't recognize it and think I'm genius.
There are lots of inspiring old (especially rock) musicians around (however obsolete) who refuse to give up and quit.
I can dress like a bum so I am no longer a target on the street
I no longer expend large amounts of time (and money) chasing skirts.
I can be cranky and people let it slide.
I am aware, completely lucid and sharp as ever but people don't think so, so they leave me alone.
I see a young person making the same mistake I did. If I tell them so, one in ten listen. That is a success.
I am afraid for the long term welfare of mankind. I won't get to see what happens for much longer.
