Getting rid of that STANK

that's basically what burning lemongrass does, replaces the odor with something tolerable
we used these cool little burners where I worked & it kept the mosquitoes away as well

the main reason we used them was to get rid of the fishy smell around our semi-indoor koi pond
I wish I could find a photo of one of those burners, they were pretty cool

Being serious...............your bass will probably air out after a while. Keep it out in the open on a guitar stand for a year.

As for the musty smelling case. Put your opened bass case into your car on a very, very hot summer day with all the windows rolled up. You'll get a temp of about 140 to 170 degrees. After about 4 or 5 hours and 3 or 4 days, this will kill the mold and get rid of most of the smell.

After that if you want to, buy a small compressed bag of pet bed cedar chips and pour it inside you case and let it sit for a week.

I had a musty and moldy smelling 1966 Fender Bass case and the hot car and cedar chips fixed the problem.

A couple of flaws with your suggestion.

1) The car will not get hot enough after the window has been broken.
2) There will be no case to put the cedar chips in.

Junkies & drug dealers come out at night like cockroaches. You wouldn't notice it because during the day the place is very nice.

Anyway, I like stank. It has the right to exist.
I mean..c'mon, everybody does even if they do not admit it. :)

But if for whatever reason OP wanted to keep the case, I can confirm that it is possible to get rid of some truly heinous odors if you are patient & determined:
A number of years ago I had a couple of bass cases (mercifully empty at the time) stored in my basement when the septic system exploded. An 8-inch deep flood of human excrement filled the room, saturating the cases.
Enzymatic cleaning solutions from the local pet supply store, plus lots of fresh air & sunshine, were the answer. I would basically drench the plush interior of the cases with the enzymatic spray, scrub vigorously with a stiff brush, then leave them outside in the sun to dry. As soon as they were dry, I would repeat that whole process again.

...and again.



...and again.

I think it took me two months of repeated cleaning/airdrying for the poo smell to be completely eradicated. But now, almost 15 years later, I still own both of those cases and use them everyday, and there's no indication of the horrific fate they suffered.

So it is possible...but it's a lot of work. Frankly, if it happened again today I'd probably throw the case away!

Really? All that work just because of only 8 inches? Now I can for sure see the effort if it had been 10-12 inches, but for 8? Meh, I might not have bothered. Like, look at my post above this one. Right? Right?


But..for those who feel differently (cannot imagine why) I admit that there is some excellent advice here.

an ozone generator will suck the stink out of anything. It probably isn't terribly safe to leave running in a room you're inhabiting though, but you can come up with something I'm sure. the smaller the airspace the better

congrats on the new bass!

You can get them from home depot and lowes, but generally you'll have to order them online now. Lots of choices there. i used to see them from time to time in certain bigger "flagship" stores, but its been a while or I haven't been looking. Seems to me ever since people figured out you really do have to use them safely, instead of indiscriminately like a box fan, they've been less popular.

I hear tell some indoor farmers have over used these and found their crops had permanently lost their odor.
