I could almost cut that to 2 though with:
- P/J fretless: J-Body, J-neck (or even a Jazz fretless)
- P/J: P-body, Jazz neck

If I was forced to choose only three, it would be:
1) FBB fretted 7 string
2) FBB fretless 6 string
3) Barker fretless 5 string

But I have regular and consistent use for two others as well, a Brice Z6 fretted and a fretless 8 string. Luckily I'm not restricted to only three ....

Out of the 6 basses I own, if I could only keep three for all my purposes it would be:

1) '97 Warwick Thumb BO 5-string
2) '96 Warwick Thumb NT 4-string
3) '95 Warwick Fortress One 5-string

Ideally, I'd like to track down a wenge-necked Thumb NT 5 or 6-string, and some type of Streamer 5-string. My best bass is my Thumb NT, and I love it to death, but I really require a 5-string bass.

If you lean toward vintage/classically styled and voiced instruments this is probably the 3 card monte to go with

I worked with this for quite a while, but ultimately had to add one more, with number 5 still in the range of possibilities.

The perfect mix for me turns out to be:

P-bass with rosewood board and flats
P-bass with maple board and rounds (this was the 4th I added)
J-bass (mine's a 5 string Lakland DJ5, which kills two birds with one stone)
Stingray

And number 5? I still think I could really use an active 5 string and my favorite I've tried is an MM Sterling 5.

I've learned not to announce that I'm done acquiring basses, because it just sets me up for the wife to point and laugh when I break down again...but I really can't think of anything I want to play that I can't cover with these.

Don't do fretless or 6 string, so I'm honestly going to try and stop at 5.

1) Old G&L SB-1 with Fralins and Flats.
2) Fender Jazz Fretless
3) Ric 4003 with rounds.

I can cop a pretty Fretted Jazz bass tone with the Ric and some compression. Anyway, messing with the Ric stopped my Jazz Bass GAS (at least for a bit)
