When I first started playing bass back in 2000,the SG-Z was the bass I was dead set on buying after my P bass.
Being young and dumb I never bought one and instead brought home a Epi EB-3.
Man,what was I thinking?
So how do you like your SG-Z? Does it differ much from a regular SG bass?

That's the plan, so we'll see how it holds up. In the meantime, I made a quick demo so anyone curious can hear what this bass sounds like.
Although it has the same pickup configuration as the SGs, I feel like it is actually much more aggressive sounding. I had to turn down the tone knob a bit to tame the bright zing, and didn't boost the bass at all on the DI.
I bought one when they first came out. I don't remember it being listed as a limited edition, so I assume it's more than the usual 400. I also have an SG, and the JR has a much better tone even with the same pickups.

My experience with regular SG-basses is limited, but due to the different pickups und placement, the SG-Z sounds very defined with a lot of mid thunder when played in series mode. You canb also get quite jazz bass like sounds in the single coil mode.
Overall it sounds very modern without beeing too fat or boomy and with decent punch. And it has a throaty character and cuts through very well against loud Guitars.
In short, I like it...
Question for SG owners: What pickup blend do you prefer? For most applications I find myself liking them both full on, tone up. I also dig the sound of the solo'd bridge pickup. It gets fairly jazz bass-ey tone that way playing over that pup.

It sounds like a beast!! Very aggressive and loud. Still messing with it to find which settings I like best but so far I am very happy with the changes

They're sweet! Which is your favourite? Or is that an impossible question?
My "go to" is the black G-3. I rebuilt a pickguard and pups for it about 5 years ago with materials from greatdealz on ebay, and they are SMOKIN. I have heard they used the same pups in the g-3 and s-1 guitar, but I am not so sure...the pups I have sound better and have more output than any other G-3 I have heard! BUT, I LOVE the G-3 reissue and Ripper. The G-3 reissue has awesome pups in it and sounds great! The ripper is a little light on output but has GREAT tone. Maybe I should invest in some duncan replacement pickups.
Just picked this up Monday. First bass. I found the short scale much more comfortable for my small hands. I'm not a huge fan of the T-Bird mini bridge pickup. I like the neck pickup. Also have a Supertone bridge on the way. Along with SA Programmable EQ and Dimension Reverb.
Any suggestions on a bridge pickup or any other upgrades?
I play with every thing up and eq the amp with mid bass, high mids and treble. The mini pup when mixed too low becomes lost a bit. My Bassman (400 head and matched 4X10 cab) has a foot switch eq so the sg is boosted much more than my Flying V (two T-bird pups) and I eq the V relatively flat but full up on tone, and volume. The V's pups are super hot compared to the SG.
Just curious how many other SG owners couldn't wait to play a Cream tune on the SG? I imediately played Sunshine of your love. I am 48 but felt like I was 15 again. I still love my SG, it doesn't appear that the honeymoon is going to end with either of my Gibsons.
I had a feeling the G-3 would be your 'go to' bass! I've played a '74 Ripper for years now, and agree about the low output thing, but yes, the tone (and neck IMO) are just great.

Thought I had already posted my new Gibson here, but apparently not. Anyway... lefty 2013 Thunderbird. Got it just before Christmas. After letting it acclimate to Vegas for a while, I had to have the fret ends (very lightly) dressed. Otherwise? Flawless. Have been playing it a lot since I got it back. Still has the original strings, - which are kinda nice, actually - which will stay until I make up my mind what to replace them with. First thing I played with it? For some reason, "Ticket to Ride" just popped into my head, so I tried that. Didn't sound bad at all; but I think my Rick doesn't love me anymore.
