There's only one simple rule: if you want to join the Club - just post a photo of your Gibson bass in this thread. Thanks and welcome!

Hey there guys and gals. One of my local shops (Parkway Music) just got a 70's Les Paul triumph bass in stock according to their web page. No affiliation, just passing the info along in case anyone here is looking to pick one up. I looked under the "new arrivals" on the main page of their website. It looks like Mungi's (beautiful) bass in the above post.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger in the next couple of weeks, and get an SG Special. I was close to getting one a couple of months ago, but talked myself out of it. I originally was going to go with the Fireburst, but the one I tried in person didn't look as good. I've seen others in photos on TB since that looked way better, so the one I saw in person was probably a fluke. In any event, I think I'm going to go with the chocolate satin. I'll post pics if (when) I go thru with it.

Please don't think that I'm knocking anyone's Fireburst basses. I do think it's a neat finish, it just isn't for me.

What are some pickup options for my 2014 SG Special Bass? Not sure if I'll replace them or not yet, but just wondering what my options are.

Beautiful burst. Good choice with the Hipshot bridge too. For pickups, the best options are offered by Curtis Novak. He does a repro bridge pickup like the vintage EB-3 had. He offers the neck pickup in a number of configurations and windings in addition to vintage repro. Then there's the DiMarzio model One for the neck pickup and also allparts.com sells replacement pickups for both neck and bridge.

Forgive me for not knowing - but I emailed Gibson recently and was a little surprised that they don't have a Custom Shop. Is this a recent development, or have they NEVER had a Custom Shop? I mean - I know they will do favors I suppose and make Custom specials for the rock stars du jour, but really - no Custom Shop for the public like Fender has?

Seems like revenue not realized to me.

I just bought an SG Special bass - in the store I played both the Standard and the SG - here are the differences:
1. the Special has Thunderbird Ceramic pickups instead of Standard pups - I found the Standard had a slightly deeper, richer tone - but that can be adjusted with amplification
2. the Special is a little lighter - although still mahogany
3. the Special has a satin finish instead of the Standard gloss - I like the feel of the satin neck
4. the Special comes with a hardshell case
5. the Special has dot fret markers instead of the Gibson bar - the 12th fret is marked with a 120th Anniversary scroll
6. as far as I could tell, the tuners, bridge, electronics, etc were the same quality on the Special and Standard

I'm running it through an Ampeg BA-115 and l love it! - I used to own a Standard SG bass

Gibson might do a custom bass but only for a major endorsing artist. I'd rather give my revenue to Chris Stambaugh. He was totally cool about helping me design my Gibson inspired custom vision. Here's a progress pic.

34" scale. It may look shorter due to the perspective of the camera. The body was made from the tracing of a 1992 Les Paul Special bass and I had the neck dimensions based on my Gibson $ bass. Pickup will be one Lollar T bird pickup. Just waiting on the limed mahogany finish. All Schaller hardware and a single ply black pickguard also.

Does he build medium scalers as well? I have seen some of his basses here and there and they look pretty nice - but I am always amazed at the builders who just don't do mediums.

i am gassing for a Les Paul Junior Bass in medium scale. The original PRS guitar designs - my main bass - were modeled after this body shape (but thicker and heavily carved) and I love it. The new blue LP Junior basses are short scale, UNFORTUNATELY - and are not available in cherry finish. I also would like an updated version of the banjo tuners on it.

Will post a pic when I find a good one.
