Wondering what kind of mods anyone has done to a short scale SG bass? Pickups, electronics, etc.
Nothing yet. I do have one of those stainless steel string bars that goes behind the bridge and keeps the string wounding off the bridge (something some folks complain about). But I'm not unhappy with the stock setup. Love it.
Same here. I just took delivery of me 2014 SG special Bass two weeks ago and took it to the studio right away even with the stock strings on. It sounded pretty good. I also noticed that the output of both pickups is much more even than on my Midtown Bass.
I did mod the midtown though. I was not able to get a proper intonation setup with the stock bridge, so I exchanged that for a supertone. I also installed a Curtis Novac EB Bisonic in the neck position which sounds awesome. I have yet to get a solution for the massive mid cancelation with both pickups together. I think about trying a bourns blend poti instead of the switch. But if anyone has better ideas...

I am not sure if this is the right place to post but I thought I would start here. Happy to be redirected.
I have an issue with my 74 Ripper- nothing out of the neck pickup and nothing at all on positions 1 and 4 of the varitone. (The wiring is standard as far as I know)
I have checked visually and the all wires are now attached (one was off the varitone- the one to the vol pot- but I have resoldered it).
I am fairly electronics illiterate but can use a multimeter and can solder. (I have replaced pickups, pots and inputs in Fenders but there is a fair bit happening under the hood of the Ripper!()
Is there a simple way I can electronically test the pickup in the bass without disconnecting it?
How do I test whether the varitone is the problem?
