Gibson Grabber/Ripper/G-3 club

1974 Gibson Grabber and a 1975 Gibson G3. I also have a reissue Grabber II that I've been digging. On the look out for a Natural G3! Love the tone on my black one.

Heya folks. I'm a newish, proud owner of a 1975 Grabber, and I'd like to join up, as well as hit you all with a few questions.

First off, anyone here know where I can get regular-wind (non-reverse), direct, drop-in replacement tuners for a '75? It seems that Hipshot has had a drastic drop in inventory somewhat recently, and I can't seem to find a match with both a short key and nickel finish. :mad: I'm also on the lookout for exact replacement screws for the area around the pickup slider. They're a bit longer than the pickguard screws.

Secondly, anybody have any experience mucking around in a Grabber control cavity while keeping the original pickup? Lower-resistance pots? Different caps? Do tell.

And finally, might there be one amongst you fine fellows, who has perhaps replaced their stock bridge for a top-loading one, and would therefore like to sell or donate their old, rear through-body string retainer thingamajig? :hiding:

I just picked up a 1976 G3. It needs to be cleaned up a bit, but it's really cool and sounds great. I will post pictures soon.

My first bass years ago was a burgundy grabber that I bought new in the mid 70's. It's long gone but I would love to pick up another some day. I came across this one but the price seem really high. What are grabbers selling for these days? I see plenty of natural finish grabbers, but burgundy seems harder to find.

I'd say $600-900 depending on condition. I wouldn't pay more than $900 unless it was near mint, in a rare color, came with all the original parts (including/especially the bridge cover), and had the original case. $1495 is insane, total nostalgia price. There's been a great condition burst G3 on my local CL for a long time now asking $1200. I sold mine (black, replaced pick guard and switch, busted ass case) in a few weeks asking $700. Guess it depends on how patient you want to be.

I thought that the price seemed really high. I would like to buy one, but I will bide my time.

My G3 seems to all original other than one saddle screw, including original case. It was really filthy though. It had a smell almost like dried urine. I think I've got most of that grime/smell taken care now. It had black gunk caked all over the fretboard. Yuk!

The prices have shot up quite a bit in the past few years, especially on Rippers and G3's. One day I'll find the right one at the right time, for the right price. Have owned several of each over the years...something really special about them to me

I may be wrong, but it seems to me the recent eBay sales of select few Grabbers in exceptional condition has created a chain reaction driving up asking prices. Hopefully potential buyers can keep from getting too eager long enough for sellers to realize they're asking too much, and the trend can die out.

That burst G3 is mine. I am asking a stiff $1200-$1350 (ohsc) for it these days. Its amazing.

Man Ive always wanted one of these basses. I played one a long time ago in a Sam Ash and it sounded like a dream. But I will say it would take me a while to get use to the playability of these basses. Very different from a Fender/Squier or an ATK which is what Im used to. Can anyone break the differences down between the three of these basses please? Ive always wondered but could never tell. Is there one that is superior to them or are they all the same but with different setups or electronics??
