Thanks for the info. I was thinking that it was a blem. Otherwise it looks good, although it's missing the truss nut cover.Sadly, I've bought some brand new Gibsons lately that should have had stamps all over the bass.

Missing truss cover and bridge cover is nothing to be surprised about. Truss cover would be nice but are frequently missing and easy enough to get an aftermarket replacement.
Here's my new to me G3 with his arrowhead brothers.

Good question! Not sure on the sound, but I can only assume they're super close to the Bill Lawrence originals. Controls are the same as a Gibson - buck n' a half! It should be in my hands tomorrow.

I have a set in my Serek and they sound great. Very close to the originals. Jake suggested using a freeway switch for 6 options an instead of 3 and the buck and a half is in there, but honestly my favorite setting has been neck/bridge like a jazz bass.

Awesome! I didn't know that Jake was also a proponent of the Freeway Switch. I have several three-pickup basses with the Freeway Switch, and it's just such a sweet and easy setup. My homemade G3 is one:

- Black/Ebony body
- Black headstock
- No die stamped serial number or Made in USA on the back of the headstock. Waterslide decal period 1975-1977?
- Black pickup covers
- Pots dates to 1977 and seem to be the original
- 3 screw truss rod plate
- Gold logo with "i" dot connected to the "G" and open "o".
- Schaller BM tuners
Any pictures of it? The real tale to know if it's pre or post 77 is the pickup covers themselves. Pre 77, the pickups were mounted via two screws into the wood of the body itself. Where 77 onwards was guard mounted with 3 screws (two on the bottom, & one centered ontop).
Which model are you considering? 77 pots would certainly say it's no older than 77.
When you say black pickup covers I assumed G3. The change from clear to black pickups was around 78 or 79, fly guitars just says "later" models had black pickups. My two were from 77 and 78 both with clear, but they have a 78 sunburst on the fly page with black pickups.

If you mean a ripper then what @Andii Syckz said is a good point, the two versus three point mounting is a good tell.

The pickups are pick guard mounted with 3 screws as you describe.
It's a G3 bass - forgot to state that in the initial post, sorry.

Based on your sightings, this dates the bass as no earlier than 78'
Yeah crucial information that was missing xD But all good, yours is potentially a 78' as stated by others.
So i bought another project....should be here next week.

Alder body, maple neck, ebony fingerboard, repaired headstock.
I know about the Seymour Duncan pickups but they are quite spendy, especially with the exchange rate.
I'm going to start off with Tbird pickups: either Barts or Decolas.

Super cool! Pickup choice is your call 100%, i'd suggest Wilde Audio L90s 4H value. @ctmullins had recommended those to me during my own ripper bass build, & they're Bill Lawrance's prefered pickup for bass! Just an option if ever

I have a the Barts, and Decolas on hand, one of those sets will go in to make the bass functional so I can evaluate it.
I do like the idea of Bill Lawrence pickups - I also have a 75 Marauder.
