years ago i asked a manager at sam ash why they had so many robo guitars on the wall when guitar center only had a couple, and he told me gibson forced them on them and putting the logo on everything seems very typical of henry to me
Their price to quality ratio is a joke. All they have now is their name, which people still flock to like sheep.

I don't have any experience with Fiat, but my Gibson basses are all really nice. Of my 6 Gibsons; 4 were purchased sight unseen, one was used and the other was bought new at GC. Maybe my experience hasn't been typical, but I've been happy nonetheless.
I have never considered Gibson as a bass manufacturer. But...I've three of their guitars ('57 ES125, 2007 SG Standard, and a 2007 L-4CES)
and won't play anything else as far as electric guitars.
The closest thing to a Gibson bass around these parts is some dude playing a 5 string Epiphone Embassy.
The make up of brands I've seen locally are 50% Fender, and 50% whatever. That "whatever" does not include any Gibsons. They're seemingly nonexistent.
I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if their bass division has gone boobies up, or does so in the near future.

Gibson killed its own basses. Fiat is killing Lancia. Coincidence? I don't think so.

2014 everyone freaked out over a banner on the 12th fret...Really? its a bass, you're not gonna play it because of that. I had a 2014 SG bass and it was really awesome; only sold it because i was broke and needed money to move.
2015 they messed everything up, raised prices and guess what?....their instruments didn't sell!!! Those instruments are being blown out for ridiculous prices. the $2600 thunderbirds are being sold for $1000 at guitar center. I played one of these 2015 thunderbirds and thought it was really well made. Their guitars are being sold pretty cheap too.
2016 The prices are extremely reasonable. Like cheaper than anything ive seen for a while; firebirds for just over $1000. No basses yet, because i'm guessing they still have a lot of stuff from 2015 & 14. I really hope they add some new basses in a few months
As far as QC, most of the Gibsons i've played felt pretty well made. The ones that weren't was stuff that a set up would fix; instruments at guitar center for some reason are always set up like crap. Anyone manufacturing stuff on the scale of Gibson and fender is going to have some issues every now and then. But IMO its not fair to dismiss all of their instruments because of it. If you're gonna complain about something it should be basic design flaws like sticking a mudbucker as close to the neck as possible on a short scale bass.

Gibson has always been a schizophrenic about their basses IMO. I almost suspect there's this long running internal battle that goes something like:
"We're a GUITAR company!"
"But we still need bass models..."
"But we're SUPPOSED to be a GUITAR company! That's what we're known for. Selling basses only muddies the waters."

"So what? We're a GUITAR company!"

FWIW, for the last five or so years I really think Epiphone's QC has been consistently better than Gibson's. Most of the Epi basses I tried out were flawless. Which is more than I can say about the Gibsons I tried. And while I might have been inclined to be a little more understanding if it were the other way around, I have a lot more trouble accepting excuses when it comes to an $1800-$3200 Gibson than I do a $500-$700 Epiphone.

That EB Bass with the dual humbuckers (not the old SG style) is a great bass. I've seen a couple used for around 6-700.
For all of you completely clueless Gibson/Fiat haters out there. Two of the most reliable, flawless and best bang for the buck products I've bought in the last couple of years...

So it is impossible for someone to generally like Gibsons?? I do, I own a Rd, A Ripper and 2 Tbirds. But I must be a sheep.
You could buy a 2015 MIA Fender for half the price of a 2015 Gibson. That alone should tell you why Gibson is where it is now.
I am not blindly biased towards Gibson, although I own a few, I have plenty of Fenders, as well some G&Ls, Rics, Geco, Ibanez.
Gibson really puzzles me. I have walked away from a number of recent Gibson basses because of QC issues, but the good ones are very good.
Most recently, I bought a second hand ES335 Bass. Absolutely great for what it is.
My vintage Gibson's are all really good, RDs, Rippers, Victorys

Interesting pricing - both examples from GC, both open box but still new, both USA made, both new innovative designs, both good basses...

The Gibson range of basses is very very niche - they would be very low volume. I would consider a range of basses for purchase, none of which are Gibson - this seems to be the case for a lot of people playing music.
I can believe they are ditching them, and it is not due to good or bad quality.
