Gibson Midtown HollowBody

You know, I didn't even notice the f-hole issues on mine until I read the post above. I can understand his point. To me though the rest of the package outweighs that issue, once you are playing and grooving on that sweet sound, you'd forget about it. When I initially bought it, I could not get past the bone colored binding, I wanted WHITE. But it grew on me, and now it makes more sense than having white binding on it. I will say that my hagstrom has binding on the f-holes that are finished real nice, I wasn't expecting the bass to be finished as well as it is, since I had read that gibson relies on its past glories and doesn't really care about the quality of what they put out, but I was pleasantly surprised. In the end I suppose it's up to what one can let go. For me the rest of the bass is awesome, the pickups, action, tone, feel, the F-holes aren't that big of a deal for me, no one is going to see me play and say," man that bass sounds sweet, but those f-holes are killing the song for me!" YMMV

Cheers!

I am pretty picky when it comes to fit and finish but because a quasi semi hollow Gibson is going to be such a departure from anything I have ever played before, I am really anxious to see the midtown and play it in person. There are none in stock anywhere around my neck of the woods.

If you're in my neck of the woods, you're welcome to stop by and try mine out.

Siggy

Where did you find them in stock? I am disappointed to hear that the finish didn't look up to par. Can you tell us a bit more. How was the fretwork and setup? Did the pickups sound good?

Long & McQuade Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. The sunburst one was ordered for me but I had to cancel the order to pay off a Fodera.

The pickups are likely the same/similar to the SG, but I found it more articulate.

Fretwork was fine and setup was perfect.

Honestly, if I didn't cancel my order, I wouldn't have accepted the bass in question. Bad for even a lower end Epi IMO.

That is discouraging. I hope that mine arrives with a bit better effort put into the finishing.

Midtown bass at NAMM:

I'm getting impatient as Gibson refuses to provide and ETA to the big retail chain that I ordered my Midtown from. Really bad customer service in that regard. I have no clue when I can expect this bass to arrive.

I got one! I did a special order through Guitar Center so I could trde in some gear so I could afford the deal. It sounds great and has a beautiful sunbirst finish. I got the second run with the rosewood fretboard, not the "baked" maple. However, it does not play or sound like an EB2. The sound is more complex but doesn't have that EB2 thump. My only issue is that the tone control does not affect the tone very much. The cap in the tone control is labeled .047mfd, but seems much smaller than a typical .047 cap. I put in a cheap cap from radio shack, but not quite satisfied. I have some orange drops on order.

So how does that fine ebony beauty play? And what do you think of it tonally?
Neck dive city, I need to buy a suede backed strap. I haven't had a lot of time with it, but sidewinder + fuzz is a whole heck of fun. It's fairly unique sounding, not like a current SG bass, even though it has the same pups (is it the longer scale? different strings from factory? something under the guts?).
