Oh, here's the letter...

I just read several blogs, and several posts on a few forums I frequent about how you guys are allegedly screwing over hip-hop artist Tonedeff. I think it's both sad and ridiculous. I thought you guys would be interested to know that the Gibson name is being slandered pretty good at multiple musicians forums that I frequent. I'm a bassist with about 20 years of experience as a working musician. I know what it's like doing what you love without much reimbursement. I do NOT know what it's like to essentially get robbed by a large, successful music company, however.

Obviously I don't know your side of it. But I will tell you that on the surface, the story makes Gibson look like typical corporate crooks. I've read enough to know that I will certainly never buy another Gibson product, or anything under the Gibson umbrella. I think it's safe to say, based on what I've read so far, that even though you haven't paid up the $10k which someone rightfully earned, you guys are going to lose that money anyway.

I'm hoping you do.

First time I'm reading this but my kneejerk reaction is this Tonedeff dude is just another tool expecting a free ride. His rhetoric is "give me what I'm entitled to".

Contest winner or not; Max out your credit cards? Yeah that's smart; give the crooked banks a bunch of free money off of interest and the opportunity to create even more fake money out of thin air,...how about getting a real job like the rest of us and being patient and making wise investments in your gear instead of expecting handouts.

Idiot Entitled Sheeple Consumers like this are one reason why the economy has tanked (The other reason is the banks are there to take advantage of his ignorance).

That's more than a little harsh, man. The guy won, so he deserves the prize that was offered. He wasn't expecting a handout, he was expecting what was rightfully his. I'll be the last to say that maxing out his credit cards was a smart decision but that wasn't the issue. Thankfully, it was all resolved... more than 3 years after the fact. Also, in the follow up post he said that the money he got from Gibson would be going towards paying off those credit card charges so he could actually be building his credit if he didn't initially run himself into the ground.

The rub is that the Gibson prize was tacked on as an afterthought. That's Don Pitts fault and I absolutely agree that the guy deserved to be let go for such a monumental screw up (if that is in fact the reason he was axed),...but Tonedeff's expecting of a bunch of free gear is a pipe dream. One that should never ever be relied on to the point of maxing out one's credit cards.

Kudos to Gibson for righting the wrong but in the end would Tonedeff have won the contest with all that fancy gear? How many people did he beat out that had 10k dollars worth of gear to produce their art on? How about working with what you have,..relying on your talents and not expecting a bunch of free gear in return. I'm happy to use my dusty old amp and my falling apart speaker cabs and my 13 year old bass.

I don't know man,...maybe I'm being too harsh,...but I can't get past the amount of entitlement and quest for material goods that permeate this blog. 3 years later I'm left wondering how much of that gear he maxed out his credit cards on has helped to further his career? How much of that gear that he maxed out his credit cards on is Gibson or Gibson subsidiary gear? How much of that gear is now obsolete and relegated to the dust bin?

I disagree but after reading it I did wonder what his plans were if he had lost the competition and not gotten the $10,000. Was there a plan at all? From the way he described his setup, you think that it was all one recording session away from coughing up a few hairballs and kicking the bucket.

back in 2004, my band won a competition in Philly. Some "underground garage band" thing. It was sponsored by Dunkin Donuts, organized by Little Steven Van Zandt and prizes were from Gibson. Well, we won for Philly (there were several cities in which a similar competition was held) and were supposed to get this (as they described it) "huge" amount of dollars worth of equipment from Gibson. We did get our prize - a Gibson Explorer, an amp, a snare drum and a Epiphone SG/EB type bass... far far less than what they had told us we would get.
Now, although we were expecting more going on what they were saying, we were actually extremely glad to get what we did get. Later we found out that Gibson reneged on a lot of their prizes and about half the bands that won in their respective cities didn't get a thing. I love Gibson instruments, I really do but as a company? they suck
