Gibson refuses prize winnings

Gibson should have done a photo-op with the guy since he won the contest. If they didn't want to include non-musicians as entrants, they should have said so at the start.

Having said that, (after reading the article) the winner should have realised that most Prize awards are based on MSRP (not retail sale price from a vendor). He and Gibson seemed to have a bad attitude toward one another. Maybe Gibson should have been more forthcoming with the prize info and giving the winner what was owed. They should do a better job at specifying the qualifications of competition entrants and avoid this type of mess in the future.

How can someone automatically assume that Baldwin pianos could be substituted for Gibson gear? :scowl:

Matt, know that I agree with you on alot of your points. Also know I was being boisterous with my "boycott" post. Tho not entirely serious with it (but still moderately so), I do still think thus far, without knowing all sides of the story that Gibson, tho not necessarily "negligent" or defaulting on their obligations to the prize winner, certainly did not handle it like a big professional corporation with artist and promotions handlers should have.

If anything, the guy repping Gibson should NOT have even made a judgemental comment about whether he played guitar or drums or whatever in the first place...that was the first thing that struck a nerve with me as being crappy, and honestly, I have not been given a reason to believe this blogger is lying about that, but I don't know either parties...it also should be mentionned the pr guy is no longer with Gibson...maybe that one guy is the sole reason this is all so poorly unresolved. Maybe he was utterly incompetent at his job...maybe he was the CEO's idiot nephew... but that would be me passing judgement on him like you've been painting the blogger as a whiner and a pita et al. No big deal, but maybe alot of us on both sides are being reactionary

Long story short, the blogger shouldn't have even had to wait this long for a resolve. He initially was the only proactive party in the equation. He tried repeatedly to get the ball rolling, and as with many things, after a while you just kinda stop trying. He wasn't outlined what was available to him, was not furnished with MSRP vs MAP pricelists or anything, and excuse the heck outta him for being "so woefully clueless" as to how things are in the "real corporate world"... I mean he's a rapper, that means he's ignant, right? (I'm totally kidding here people, no hate mail)
hell, not everything is common knowledge, and in his case he wasn't even given a chance to be educated in it because the PR guy dropped the ball. If you've never had a reason to know the hows and whys, why should it be assumed you'd know it at all? He was direct to an online catalog. The pianos were in the catalog...

so his misguided sense of being wronged is now being bought into by other dim wits who read this dim wit's blog.

I actually feel like I am the only one in this thread that was able to read and the article and focus on the facts, and that everybody else in this thread lacks basic reading comprehension skills.

ok....

Umm,
I read several responses (not all) in this thread. I read about 30 posts or more into the thread (for me page two)

So you make these vast generalizing statements about the other posters yet you didn't even bother to read the full thread yourself

Way to go there genius :rollno:

What is your source for that little tid-bit of information? That directly contradicts how the blogger tells the story in the blog you linked in the first post. He said nothing of Don Pitts sending him a catalogue at any time. Is there another article about this some place that I haven't seen yet, or do we just get to make stuff up as we go?

You're right...he doesn't say WHO told him to go to the online catalogue, I just assumed he was talking about Mr.Pitts since almost all of his dealings were with him. He was told to go there and pick things out. It could be all BS...every bit of it. But wouldn't Gibson sue for some kind of defamation? I mean...this thing is huge!

Quote from Blog:
"I was basically told to go to the Gibson website and browse the catalog to pick what I wanted. Mind you, there were no price listings anywhere to be found on this site – so how was I supposed to tally anything? Well, I took the proactive route and used SamAsh.com and GuitarCenter.com for price references on the gear that was on the Gibson website."

From what I gather (just speculations) from reading the Gibson website forums and the CEO's response(if it's actually his letter). 1. Don Pitts was let go from Gibson (no reason given). 2. The CEO of Gibson has final say in all promotions. 3. CEO did not know about Gibson being involved in the Lollapalooza "Last Band Standing".

This issue is kinda suspect because with a quick Google search I found many newspaper and music magazine features (from many cities) about the contest from 2006 that all state that Gibson was a sponsor with a 10k prize. How could you not know about your involvement in something so large that took place over many months?

I really don't see any problems on Gibson's end.

There are several sides to each story, and the author of the blog certainly could have acted better, but if you really don't see any problems with how Gibson handled it, you need to re-read the article. You even mentioned yourself that the Gibson representative admitted that he was new, and wasn't sure how the contests are handled. That's not a problem?

Gibson said he could pick any $10,000 worth of Gibson gear. He said he wanted a Baldwin piano. They said you need to pick Gibson gear - $10,000.

One of the first things that the representative said to him was that it was weird, because the contest winner doesn't even play the guitar or the drums. That, to me, implies that drums could have been selected as part of the prize package. Drums, that like the Baldwin pianos, don't have the Gibson name on them, but are under the Gibson family of products. So I don't see any wrongdoing on the contest winners part in thinking he could have selected a Baldwin piano.

Again: Baldwin Pianos are listed on the Gibson website as being part of the "Gibson Family of Products." So, while it is possible that Baldwin products were not within the scope of the contest (we don't know one way or another because we haven't yet seen the contest rules), the fact that he selected a Baldwin piano is no less reasonable than if he had selected Epiphone guitars.

A very good point and /thread

What are you talking about:confused: Vast generalizing statements about other posters? Prove it. You can't. You have two quotes - neither of which is a vast generalizing statement about posters in this thread.

This wasn't even about this thread. Read it again. It's in reference to the "dim wit's blog and the other people who respond to it". The "dim wit's blog" is the blog that this thread is about. It was linked in the first post. I read the blog, and then two pages of this discussion thread, then I responded to the original post. That response was entirely in regards to the first post. In my opinion, it is perfectly reasonable to reply to the first post in a discussion thread without reading every single post in the thread, as long as your comments are limited to the content of the first post.

This was a direct response to a poster who told me I "lacked basic reading comprehension skills" (it is taken out of context) what I said was meant to be directed only at the other posters who were actively debating the opposite point of view. At the time I posted that, several people were disagreeing with me quite adamantly. Also, I was fully aware that I had not read every response to the thread just (which I freely admit) and because of that, I realized that there was a chance that somebody along the way had already posted an opinion that was in line with my own, and that I quite possibly was not the only person in the thread with my point of view. That is exactly why I prefaced my statement with "I actually feel like" - that means that I am talking about my feelings, and not necessarily an absolute truth.

Wow. I always know that I've won when the other person has to resort personal attacks, low blows, or any type of condescending statements. You obviously failed to prove your point. Who's the genius now?
FWIW - I enjoyed the Gibson vs The Rapper debate, and I hope that some of the folks in this thread weren't really as wound up about the subject as they seem.

I like Gibson guitars. They play pretty. The robot guitar was a bit much, but I'm willing to let that slide.

...So where's Gibson's side of this story anyway? We got that one little blip from that executive guy that basically said, "Well, ****, I had no idea this was going on, lemme check up on this..." and then nothing. Any updates?

"I always know that I've won when the other person has to resort personal attacks, low blows, or any type of condescending statements."

Time to windex that glass house, buddy.

You have called the blogger a "jerk",an "idiot", and a "dim wit" when trying to make your point.

So Chingas, what shall you do, now that you've won the internet!
