Gibson Ripper controls

Easy man! It's not like anybody's getting paid to answer questions here. <*eyeroll*>

The two pickups sum to the same volume and tone stack. The coil is 1.5 Henries. Period.

Here's the schematic from Gibson. The value of the choke isn't written on the schematic. But if you look the referenced part up, it's 1.5 Henries.

There is also the pre-made Q-filter unit available from Wilde Pickups. The guitar version is 1.8 mH and the bass version is 3.0 mH. That unit includes both capacitor and inductor in one unit. I have these in my other two passive basses, while my Ripper still has the original Q-filter components.

The 2 coils are connected together in series so are used as 1 coil. The total inductance is ~ 1.5 Henries... I just measured the coils from my Ripper that is in pieces with a dead pickup.

One of the two coils in my Ripper's bridge pickup was dead. Tom Brantley rewound the pickup for me last summer and did a great job. It was $92 including shipping and took a couple of weeks. It sounds great!

This is definitely the easiest and most elegant way to get Bill Lawrence's Ripper-style mid feature on your instrument. At a cost of $24 for drop in convenience, it's a no-brainer for me. YMMV.

This newer design comes in either 1.8 or 3.0 Henries. The 3.0 works a little better on most basses. The 1.8 (intended to used for guitar) works better with more trebly "mid forward" bass pickups such as those found on Rics and Rippers. Or possibly the super-ferrite pups found on some old Peavey basses.

For the price it's not too expensive trying both out to see which you prefer.
 
The size coil you need depends on the impedance of the pickups and pots. The higher the impedance of the pickup circuit, the lower the value of coils that will work to give the same freq effect... double the impedance, half the Henries to have the same frequency effect, or vice versa. If you add capacitors it gets trickier because it becomes a tuned tank kind of filter, but the relative sizes still applies.
 
I got the one by kent Armstrong & until i build my ripper replica, i won't know how it interacts or sounds like the original. It is 1.5 henries like the original, so i should be fairly close (then again , im still on the fence if i use the Duncan Replacements or if i go humbucker lipstick tube pickups (just something different - still in black)
