Gibson SG Slotted headstock- Why?

I know Gibson follows tradition but a scarf joint like Epiphone uses on their instruments helps reduce the neck snapping tendencies considerably.

A good friend has a beautiful Les Paul Supreme he has broken the head stock at the nut twice. He is meticulous in caring for his gear and just unlucky I guess. It’s probably stronger now than ever.

My slot head sounded so bad I didn't have time to really notice it's headstock. Doing a major label demo in about 1976 the producer stopped the session, went home, and brought me a J-bass. That was my cue to sell it.
