Gibson strikes again!

I'll be surprised if there's any earth shaking decline in Gibson fanhood among guitar players. Too much good history, too much momentum. Could just end up being a tempest in a teapot, in the end.

Ibanez restored their sullied reputation (and then some) after years of stealing designs back in the day. Any harm done to Gibson's image (by Gibson themselves) can easily be overcome.
I know you're right... I knew they'd bounce back from the bankruptcy episode but this blunder seems even more cringe-worthy because it's just stopping a good deal of momentum they were gaining towards a really miraculous recovery of their reputation... right in it's tracks.

So a lawsuit is going to improve sales like it (didn't) back in the 70's? They sure do like to kick a sleeping lion.

It may not have improved sales back then, but it probably stopped some of the hemorrhaging. It remains to be seen who the "lion" is, and who's been doing the kicking.

The old management didn't care but apparently the new management does, so if Gibson really do own those designs then I guess they can "protect" them.

Maybe the various companies can negotiate deals to licence some Gibson designs in their instruments and carry on with their businesses.

Rember when Gibson and CBS Fender had let quality slide and the Japanese market took off on better quality copies? In fact the only "lawsuit" was against Ibanez for a Les Paul copy. Ibanez shook them off and launched the artist series which is still revered today.

Funny thing is both companies had to cannibalize subsidiaries to launch affordable instruments that still paled in comparison to the Japanese copies.

In this case, Gibson is kicking the boutique builders who make better Gibsons than...Gibsons. Heck, even PRS's mid level gives them a run for the money.

Gibson needs to worry about quality and integrity. Not setting up lawsuits on companies like Dean, who everyone knows (isn't supposed to be) in the arena as Gibson.

Yep, I remember it vividly, watched it with my own two eyes. The Les Paul suit against Ibanez served as a "shot across the bow" of Ibanez and any other would-be design thieves. The Ibanez copies were clearly higher quality than Gibson at the time, everyone could see that, and sales were gathering inertia. Had Gibson not sued, there is little doubt that Ibanez would have followed up with a line of Gibson 330 series thefts, and maybe every other iconic Gibson model. And why not?....nothing breeds success, like success.
