Hi gang...I'm doing another "resto-mod" for a friend of mine. A late 60's EBO, that will be reincarnated as an EB-3...it was in a poorly refinished state...

Pickup route complete...I couldn't get an EBO overlay, but I could get an SG one that was basically the proper size, but too narrow near the bottom of the headstock...so I squared it off and added ebony extensions to cover it completely.

This is going very well. That's really nice mahogany body.

Moving right along..gouge in body patched with mahogany strip, headstock overlay in place and roughly trimmed, new nut fitted.

I got the overlay from a place called .. Invalid Link Removed . And from the looks of it, the Croxguitars site looks almost identical...??? Anyway, it's a high quality piece...the overlay is some kind of fiber, not wood. The inlays are perfect.

Getting some color rubbed in....

What do you use to rub the color in?

Colortone liquid stains mixed with isopropyl alcohol...dunk small pad of terrycloth in it, and wipe on and rub in. I used a mix of red mahogany, cherry, and vintage amber. To fine tune the light and dark spots, I squirted a few drops of red mahogany right onto a pad with alcohol already on it to darken the lighter areas. The litte repair patch is going to get a bit more attention before the nitro goes on. A wipe with vintage amber and cherry are in the mix as well. I'll add a few drops of color to the lacquer as needed to keep the color on track.

Getting closer to the color I'm looking for..this is still only stain.

Sidetracked a bit. I kept seeing a line show up next to the neck, turns out the neck joint was separating...probaby dropped or tweaked at some point in its life. I didn't want to disconnect the neck completely, so to find out if I could force glue into it, I enlarged the strap button screw hole slightly, and tried to force lacquer thinner through it. Turns out I could, it seeped out the crack and neck joint, so I blow dried it with compressed air, and forced gap filling CA glue through the hole. Clamped it and kept it warm for 2 days, and now it is more solid than when it got here. Cherry color coats are done, now for the clear....
