Gig bag killing strings?

Hello all. Long time lurker first time posting.

I've noticed that my strings seem to die much more quickly than they should recently. I've become involved in the local music scene once again and a friend let me have one of his old gig bags. It is a BC Rich gig bag with a fuzzy material on the inside.

I use DR high beams on all of my basses and with the amount of time of I play, they usually last me 2-3 months before I feel I need to change them. I noticed my last set sounded much duller after keeping one of my basses in the bag for a few hours. They were bright before and after a few hours in the gig bag when I took my bass out to play, they sounded much older.

This has happened more than once already. Has anyone else had such an experience? Is there anything I can do about it or should I just get a new case/bag?

Thoughts and opinions appreciated.

I had to give up my gigbag and go back to my hardshell case for a similar reason. My strings were deteriating too fast and I attribute this to the amount of exposure it was receiving. In my Carvin hard case, the form fitting keeps out the air and moisture to a far greater degree. Keep in mind I am in Hawaii and the salt air is an issue. I did not have this issue when I lived in central New York. Don't know if this helps you any. Also, I now use Bassbrites string wipes religiously, and they are helping alot. Frank

Thanks for the info. This might be the case for me as well. I do live in a a very humid area near the coast.

Is the inside of the gigbag damp at all? That could cause strings to die prematurely. The BC Rich deluxe guitar gigbag which btw fits most basses, is a very good gigbag that I like better then most.

Check the goigbag carefully for any feel of dampness. If it is put it out in the sun for a day to dry out. Or take hair blow dryer to it. Lol.
