gig bag or hard case?

i think that the whole thing is just so damn heavy no ones gonna run off with it if i take my eyes off it at a show.

As to the case vs. bag question, I have one of each...for both my main basses. My rule of thumb is to use the gig bag(s), a) if I'm going to anything local, where b) I'll have the instrument(s) in my personal possession at all times, and c) there'll be nothing in the environment that might prove to be a physical threat to my instrument(s).

If all of the above can't be assured, it goes in the hard case...
