i think that the whole thing is just so damn heavy no ones gonna run off with it if i take my eyes off it at a show.

Don't count on it...

As to the case vs. bag question, I have one of each...for both my main basses. My rule of thumb is to use the gig bag(s), a) if I'm going to anything local, where b) I'll have the instrument(s) in my personal possession at all times, and c) there'll be nothing in the environment that might prove to be a physical threat to my instrument(s).

If all of the above can't be assured, it goes in the hard case...

Hard case for sure. I make it a habit to allocate up to 20% of the value of an instrument to cover cases and insurance. Both have saved my instruments and thousands of dollars in the past.

Hard case for me always.
Been in more than a few situations where my neck would have been broken for sure.
Along with neck support--it has kept it from getting wet from rain on several occasions.

being how klutzy i am i have severely damaged the neck of my old bass from collisions and such
luckly i got me a hard shell for my new bass
