Double Bass Gig bag strap reliability

Basses are high-stress machines, so if something can break, it will break. I’ve seen a video of a tailgut failure that left the tailpiece embedded in the drop ceiling above. Carrying a bass by a shoulder step is asking for trouble.
True. I agree, but still do it. Only short distances though now. I use a bass buggie for anything of distance.

I had a luggage cart thingy for a while when I was younger. But it turned out that unless I'm going a really long way, putting the cart on the bass takes longer than just walking. As my back and I get older I might change my tune, but until then I only mess with a wheel or anything that requires me to do anything other than "take the bass out of the car" if I'm going more than a couple blocks.

I do use the shoulder strap but I back it up with a hand on the other straps.
