GIG DISASTER - Cab meltdown today - help?

My 800C had one channel go - it smoked like a 3 alarm fire and took out the cab plugged into that channel. The good news is that I had a replacement amp from Eden in less than two weeks. The cab took longer, but my local shop gave me a loaner whenever I needed a second cab. My meltdown had absolutely nothing to do with generator power. It was a problem with the amp, period.

I eventually ended up with a 1205, and then as you can see from my sig, I've moved on to an Aguilar for my big rig amp, but I still use the cabs and my 550 all the time.

I know that I have had problems with Eden heads and line voltage issues. The amp would overheat and shut down. So when we are on generators, or some of the venues that I know that have voltage issues I go with a diffrent head. My EA, or SWR. they work better with less than ideal power delivery.

Man I totally feel for you as I have had stuff go up in smoke on generator power before.
I have a good friend that was supplying his guitar amp to some people for a festival here, he was playing the gig. ( I sub w/ him often) He asked if I had a bass rig they could rent for a bass monitor. At first I said no then I gave in and said they could use a 100 watt Bassman I have. In the back of my mind I just had a nagging feeling they would blow it up. I figured they would have generator power as it was at a park out of town. Sure enough he calls me on monday and said...you guessed it both his amp and mine blew up. BUT the festival organizers were going to fix them. I was very surprised especially since the festival was called HEMPSTOCK !!! you get the idea...LOL... I haven't got it back yet but he took it to the shop and still says they are going to pay. SOoooo maybe your situation will turn out not so bad. You might ask them to pay part of the repair bill at least.
Anyway I will say a little repair prayer for you and I hope it all works out.

You might also try contacting Eden. Who knows, 6 months out of warranty isn't all that long, they might stand behind their product. It's worth a try, you might get someone nice on the phone who lets you send it in for a replacement or repair. Good luck!

Reading all this really makes me think about Eden. Granted I have not read good things about reliability from them but I have a few more questions to ask:

What about the guitar player's amps?

What about the PA, the several power amps there, the mixer, rack, etc?

If the power was that bad, it is doubtful that they would give the bass player his own generator. In fact ill-advised due to different grounding potentials.

So if the power was indeed that bad, would the PA and other electronics not be affected?

And where was Eden's DC output protection during all this? That amp should have been able to detect DC and disconnect the outputs. I know Ampeg does this with relays, others use transformers on the outputs, and some... well do nothing.


Just trying to get some facts before we start attacking the venue here.

You aren't by chance referring to the 'DC' light on the front panel? Because that just indicates the internal DC supplies are operating, according to the manual.

No, most if not all amps incorporate some sort of fault detection into the output circuitry. This would include but not be limited to detecting DC on the output.

When DC is detected on the outputs, most amps will shut down because DC destroys speakers quick while overheating the output section. (hence your "plunge" from the speakers when you turned the amp on)

While a very small (mV) amount is normal, the amount you are describing is NOT.


On another note- not really sure why there would be a 2nd power light (AKA the DC light) This would tell you (as you said) that the rails within the amp are live. Contrary to some people's belief, an amp simply modulates that very DC into a sine wave (AC). The frequency of that wave depends on the note you are playing. The amplitude depends on the volume you are playing. When all works well, the input looks like the output just louder!

Has Eden had a chance to examine the amp? I would really hope they integrated this circuitry and since it failed; perhaps they could help you with the repair bill on the amp at least.

YES!!!!!!!! This feels like 1000 pounds lifted off my shoulders!! THANK YOU EDEN..Couldn't call fast enough!! Got an RMA for head and cab, and they're local! Bringing in asap/ tomorrow. Drinks at AliveOne tonight on me! (In Chicago, we play every thursday, though I'll be depending on my backup combo til this is done). Stay tuned..:hyper:

I think I am speechless:eek: :D

But Cameron is 100% right on this one, this is what Eden's CS should always be like.
Tim has been working hard trying to rebuild the CS rep at Eden, hopefully they all can get taken care of this easily.

He's right you know... but then I'm just an EE.

There are power conditioners that will help you - but they aren't any of the ones people normally use.
