Gig - too good to be true?

At one time, (3-4 years?) there was a LARGE very nice club that opened up in Yulee as a country venue. I was there and so was my wife's band. They did HUGE business right up until they decided to have the Girls Gone Wild tour come through their bar and they got busted for underage everything and ultimately shut down.

I haven't heard a thing about that room since.

Well you're in LA Right? If any of these things money or fame can happen you have a better chance in LA.

Probably so. Being in LA does help. Though, I long ago lost my dreams of making money and becoming famous.
My idea of "making it" these days would be to continue to create good music, put out albums for sale, and play paying shows to a larger audience.
I could settle for that, but it still takes a good amount of work to get there.

After searching for clubs in Yulee, FL on Google maps I also found "Reni's Redneck Yacht Club" which seems to have live bands come in quite often according to a search. It's just south of Yulee. Doesn't sound at all like the original description.

Eeeesh! Looks like a blast.

I saw that one, too. It seems like their site is mostly to promote the band of the same name.

In my experience, if it sounds WAY too good to be true... then it is. I wouldn't hold my breath. People always talk to me about these amazing events at a super secret venues that nobody knows about where 500 heads show up and there's tons of spoils to be had. As soon as I start talking business... *POOF* the magical venue disappears.

We had a scam being run in Toronto where they would hire a band and send a cheque ahead of time. The cheque was "accidentally" for more than the band's fee. If it cleared at the bank you gave the extra back to the event organizer. If it didn't clear, you had the bank and police after you for trying to cash a bad cheque.
Not saying thats happening here, but be wary!

Well, it sounds like the pay was a little too good to be true, but I think you should definitely take the gig if it's a real place.

If you're still in high school and living at home with your parents, you should take every conceivable gig you can that will get momentum behind your band, even if they pay only covers gas money and food.

Why? Because it will be much, much harder for you to build momentum once you're out on your own and paying rent. When you're paying rent, those gigs that aren't tremendously profitable but generate good exposure will become harder and harder to take. You'll have to start doing what pays the bills, and 9 times out of 10 that won't be music.

You should never, ever pay to play, no matter how young you are. But while your folks are subsidizing your food and rent, you should take every gig you can get, even if it's only breakeven. Scope the place out, find other bands who have played there and talk to them, and if it's real, take the gig. Good luck!

I share the opinion that we should do it even without the supposed ludicrous pay. The only gig we've ever turned down was one in Orlando that was in the heart of a gang land and owned by a biker gang

One of the coolest gigs I ever played was for a bunch of Hell's Angels at a house way out in the sticks. When we arrived in the van, a big hairy biker came up and said, "Are you the band?" We timidly replied, "Uhhh, yeah." He said, "Well, if anybody gives you any [crap], just tell me and I'll kick their ass." Then a whole bunch of them helped us unload the van and set up. When we loaded out, we had to step over all the passed-out drunk bikers lying in the dirt driveway.

"But it wasn’t a dream. It was a place. And you and you and you… and you were there. But you couldn’t have been could you? No. Aunt Em, this was a real truly live place and I remember some of it wasn’t very nice, but most of it was beautiful; but just the same. All I kept saying to everybody was I want to go home and they sent me home! Doesn’t anybody believe me? But anyway, Toto, we’re home! Home. And this is my room and you’re all here and I’m not gonna leave here ever. Ever again. Because I love you all. And, oh Auntie Em! There’s no place like home!"
