Gigging Jerry Jones/Danelectro

I have a Danny Longhorn (with wood bridge) & the intonation isn't even close. I love the sound & look (& weight) of this bass but can't play it above the 5th fret in tune, therefore... I can't play it.
Any suggestions?

Replace the bridge and it's gonna be waaaaaaaay better. I have a Jerry Jones now but my first Longhorn was the Dano re-issue I got as soon as the came out and after I replaced the crappy tuners and put on an adjustable bridge I was a lifelong convert. A Longhorn of some sort has been my main electric bass since then.
If you want a stock replacement bridge that will go on using the old two hole pattern one is available from Danelectro:

I've never actually seen one of these in person so I couldn't comment on how well they work. They're probably ok though.
I put a stock 5 hole Fender type bridge on mine. It was the knurled saddle vintage type I kinda liked because you can adjust the string spacing to some degree. Something like this:

I didn't worry about matching the holes from the old bridge. They're not expensive basses and as a player's bass with the adjustable bridge the re-sale value will be higher than with that cruddy wood thing. I can't remember if I had to plug the old ones with maple dowel and re-drill for the new bridge or if they lined up or were out of the way....
Almost any 3+3 guitar tuners will work. Grovers are nice but Gotohs for about half the price work very well....I have them on the Jerry Jones and they are probably the most bang for your buck.

You'll have two left over but you'll have spares (that you probably won't ever need). If you have the work done by a luthier you can flow them to him for his spare parts collection and future considerations when you actually do need a spare part.
Good luck with this. For the kinda music your band plays I think you'll really dig the Dano thang once you get it playable.
I had a new issue DC silver sparkle. Unfortunately I sold it to a friend and when I asked for it back he said he had already sold it. It was a GREAT bass for $250. The MHs were crap, but it never really went out of tune. The bridge was crap, but the action was good. The hum if both volumes were not full was horrible, but I always played both full up. It was light, present, cool, and retro/cheap(inexpensive). Definitely one of those, "I wish I had not sold it" basses.

Love my Jerry Jones copperburst longhorn with the wooden bridge. After gigging with it for years and watching the value go up, I think it's time to retire it from gigs and just use it for recording. Looking for something to replace it with.
