Gigging solo

Forgive my ignorance, but I've never seen anyone play a solo bass show. How exactly does that work. You just go on stage with an elctric bass and start jamming by yourself. :bassist: Sounds cool, but I don't know how many non bassists would dig it, but by your responses it looks like there's a decent market for it, can someone explain please.:confused:

Hi Fast Plant,

to get a handle on some of what's possible, have a listen to some of the solo bass MP3s on my site - Invalid Link Removed , michael dimin's site - Invalid Link Removed , michael manring's site - www.manthing.com , dave pomeroy's site - www.davepomeroy.com , trip wamsley's site - www.tripwamsley.com , and anything from victor wooten's first CD 'Show Of Hands' and anyone else listed at Link Removed

there are lots of different ways of approaching solo bass performance, ranging from Michael Manring using altered tunings and some pretty unbelieveable techniques to make one bass sound unlike anything you've ever heard, through what I do which is using real time looping and processing to layer up many parts, all from my bass, with nothing pre-recorded. Check out any of the MP3s from either my first CD, 'And Nothing But The Bass', which was all recorded in concert, or my latest CD, 'Not Dancing For Chicken' which was all record live in the studio, one take, no edits.

Bass has come a long way since Jet Harris first used it to play melodies over his band in the very early 60s... :D

no, usually you do not just step on stage and start jamming.

I play avant-garde classical music for the electric bass usually in concert halls so my gigs generally have the feel of a chamber music concert.

Thanks, I'll check some of that out. It's all new to me, I've been playing bass in bands for years, but never heard anything solo. I'm excited to hear it.
