Gimmick or real audio improvement??

About 15 or so years ago I knew the US distributor for ATC out of Woodbridge, CT. They only handled the domestic line, not the professional but did have access to those speaker systems. I borrowed a portable ATC 20 I forget the exact nomenclature) and I think those small speakers way back then were around $6K. They were oddly shaped, like some of the Bearfoot speakers in this thread. I think the enclosure was metal. They were hardcore mobil pro monitors.
A friend bought a pair of the ATC domestic monitors that set him back around $15k around the same time I was playing with the pro pair. I've had a lot of very high end home gear and would, without a doubt, list those ATC 100's up there with some of the best. That Billy Woodman's sick puppy. but I've always been a fan of British audio gear. I'm sure the same can be said about the folks at Barefoot.
I don't if it's the beer I'm drinking right now , but I don't understand the "Cardio sub" thing for home studio...
Why someone would want to control the amount of bass behind the speakers ?

Why do you want bass behind the speaker firing at the front wall and reflecting back into the room out of phase with the directly radiated sound from the driver?
Recent photos of Blackbird Studio’s new Atmos room are staggering. A full 7.2.4 system, all built with ATC monitors. If the price of Barefoot monitors is upsetting some folks they should do the math on what that setup costs. I don’t know which ATCs were used for each location, but it could easily get to $200K just in speakers without considering an Atmos-capable monitor controller and amplifiers all of which would add up to an additional many-thousand dollars. Suddenly Barefoot sounds like a bargain.
Oh ya thats a standard studio ! very unique and not common also purpose built for that application , I worked for JPL YA you can spend stupid amounts of $$$ for specialty systems trust me ! . anyhow crazy setup

Who decides what’s “standard?” Further, why does it matter? There are monitors available at all price points, so why the need for the need for derision?
just a conversation , needing monitors at that price in 99% of cases are a waste of $ or are a gimmick to get high priced clients , typical expensive studio trick , next all done here. Nothing personal dude !

I did NOT specifically call anyone stupid or dumb but the concept, so theres that , read what you like how you like.
Just people that buy monitors at that price tier.
I appears that you did not heed my previous warning. Using terms like dumb and stupid towards people who buy a products that you would not is inflammatory. If it continues, I will consider it to be trolling. I hope I have made myself very clear at this point.

I stand corrected on my previous post. That’s 9.2.6, and possibly even the full Dolby spec 11.2.8 if there are additional monitors not in the shot.
EDIT: The article says 9.1.6 but also includes a picture of four subs, so… 9.4.6? I’ve only dabbled in Atmos mixing but would love to hear this space.
In the PNW, there are plenty of cars running around with a bike hanging off the back that cost 3x-4x as much as the car hauling them. The early 90's Honda Civic with a $12k dollar downhill is a common site.
I don't know why high priced monitors sounds absurd. I have seen many articles with $100k JBL's, or multiple sets of monitors each costing $50k+. The requirements of a professional studio at Sony or Disney is very different than the ones in a basement recording underground metal albums.
The psychology of a thread like this is all about money. Expensive items seem to invite skepticism; but that doesn't really make much sense.
Any product could (from someone's point of view) be a gimmick, at any price range. The likelihood of that being the case - whatever it might mean to you - would logically seem to be greater for low cost impulse buys, where a person spends little time on the decision and has little to lose, compared to higher cost items like high end studio monitors which are marketed toward professionals, who tend to take time to justify their purchases (or earn the money themselves, if they are the studio owner), may know others who have first hand experience or the means to try the product before buying, and who as a rule already have something of pro quality to compare against.

The OP asked if this is a "gimmick". So if some people respond that they do feel the expense is unnecessary I don't think they are being hostile or derogatory.
Justifying this expense with the explanation that some studios have a lot of money sort of reinforces the idea that there's more marketing than substance. I would be more interested in the opinions of people who have used the products and can compare/contrast with other options.
