I'm not sure what you're asking or suggesting in this thread title, but fwiw Barefoot Sound speakers are some of the finest studio monitors I've ever had the pleasure of using. (Note, I've only ever used their MicroMain series monitors.)

What gimmick are you referring to?

The Footprint 01 and 02 models have been out for quite a while and have lots of real world reviews. The 01s are reportedly so bottom-heavy that they’re not well suited for anything other than EDM, hiphop or other genres with giant low end. The 02s are reportedly more balanced but have quite a large sonic footprint. They’re all DSP based which introduced some system latency. Some folks will say they’re not good for live monitoring as a result but the latency is so low that it’s imperceptible to humans.

Overall probably the least desirable Barefoot monitor, but all Barefoot monitors are such high quality that they’re still awesome for their intended purposes.

You mean the side firing subs? It does improve bottom end response. At least, perceived bottom end response. Most lows are thrown out from the ends of the speakers. Mids and highs are more directional, from the inside of the cone. If you walk to the sides, or behind your cabs, you hear the lows dominantly. In front in clear and crisp. So, having the low end woofers facing sideways, gives you more perceived bass. It makes sense.

It's effectively a 3-way monitor with DSP. There's a massive list of monitors with the same thing going on in a variety of configuration. If that's your criteria you'd be passing on a lot of monitors currently, and an increasingly large list moving forward as more and more monitor manufacturers move to DSP-based solutions.

It’s not about being dumb, it’s about the target demographic. Home users aren’t the market for most Barefoot products. Professional, commercial studios are. A flagship Barefoot product isn’t even the top priced manufacturer out there. Do a flagship ATC build in a large control room and you’re into six-figures.

I agree. In studios where spending $20k on a mic is not a problem, $50k for monitors is not out of line.
