Wear sunscreen

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it
The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists
Whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable
Than my own meandering experience, I will dispense this advice now

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth, oh, never mind
You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth
Until they've faded but trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back
At photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now
How much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked
You are not as fat as you imagine

Don't worry about the future
Or know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum
The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind
The kind that blindsides you at 4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday
Do one thing every day that scares you

Don't be reckless with other people's hearts
Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours

Floss

Don't waste your time on jealousy
Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life.

You'll miss them when they're gone

Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't
Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't
Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the 'Funky Chicken'
On your 75th wedding anniversary
Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much
Or berate yourself either
Your choices are half chance, so are everybody else's

Enjoy your body, use it every way you can
Don't be afraid of it or what other people think of it
It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own
Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your own living room
Read the directions even if you don't follow them
Do not read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly

Get to know your parents, you never know when they'll be gone for good

Be careful whose advice you buy but be patient with those who supply it
Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past
From the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts
And recycling it for more than it's worth

Don't sweat the small stuff:
Nobody in the crowd gives a shag about that little run you screwed up leading into the second chorus.

Always Performance > Tone. Having great tone is like icing on the cake of your performance. Absolutely essential to some people, taken for granted or even completely unnoticed by others, but very rarely enjoyed for its own sake. Or if the cake tastes like poopie.

Try to take up some healthy habits like exercise or meditation. Don't drink too much alcohol, or do to much chemical indulgence of any kind. Don't berate people or waste your energy on hate. Don't try to be someone you are not. Be honest and people will like you more. Learn to be comfortable with yourself and it will help to make others comfortable as well. Play your music with conviction!
 
The crowd will rarely notice when you've played a wrong note....so don't give them that "grimace" and give it away.

I have a good friend who had a band I went to see once. Sort of a jazz combo doing punk rock songs.

Anyway, a few bars into the second or third song, he blows his stack and brings the set to a halt. Just makes everyone stop. Then he proceeds to dress down the sax player publicly and vocally for missing a beat or clamming a note...

My jaw dropped. Couldn't believe it. And this happened more than once (with different band members) 3 or 4 times during the show.

Thing is, NOBODY in the audience would have been the wiser. It made it very awkward and unpleasant for the entire audience and the rest of the set the band members were almost cowering. It was ridiculous and inexcusable.

Now, I love this guy, and he's a good musician but where I come from, you don't stop a song or a set for nothing...you keep playing through regardless. If it's a train wreck, well, people like to rubberneck. Then you just smile and say "Well, we tried dammit! Here's our next number..."

Or maybe pretend it was just a piece of avant free jazz...

After the show I told my friend: "That was about the most UNprofessional thing I ever saw. You being a tyrant ruined the show for everyone and if it had been me you called out on that stage, I would have laid you out right then and there with a short punch to the face."
