Giving the ultimatum

anyone that tells you that you can't be replaced is lying. even Wooten can be replaced.

but I agree I would not play in a band with a guitarist that low. he will be in your range constantly & two low end instruments sound horrid if their parts are not really worked out and complementary. it is a recipe for mud sandwich sound if you ask me.

Yep, that's my take. If you're playing the exact same riffs, fine, but it sounds like, since you're not taking part in any of the song writing, with the guitarist going to the eight string you're not even going to be have any input or independence with your bass lines either.

Wish them well and find another band. I have a hard enough time convincing the keys player in my band to lay off with his left hand.

Well like the other TB thread... "talk to your band".

I play with pianists often, and they have the entire musical range on their instrument (quantized in semi-tones). Doesn't bother me, as they listen and play what is needed to fit and make the whole better than the sum of parts. (Well we try to do that with varying success.)
Now playing with an organ is tricky as the organ usually takes over the bass role... but anyways... It is about arrangement... big bands have 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 5 saxes, guitar, piano, bass, all with overlapping pitch ranges... but they are arranged to sound good together. A sax and a trombone may be playing a unison line but the timbre wanted is when they play unison, and not one or the other...

But is is up to you and your team... maybe it is time to part ways?

I hear about these scenarios every so often... sounds like these are some really cool people for you and, hey, if the guitarists wants that low E... Invalid Link Removed - in a musical context of a 4-part harmony (or 3 or whatever you wish) someone needs to fill in those higher notes, if they're busy down there... why not?

no, i can't and i won't. as a bassist i get musicians walking all over me constantly. i have never been allowed to write in a band. i have never been able to do the recording. i have never been allowed to book a gig. the only thing i have, is my zone. and now my guitarist wants to take that away too.

I CAN"T put up with it. trust me i do want to. but i can not.

I think this is the perfect opportunity for you to start your own band and do what you want to. It won't be an easy move but in the end it will be well worth the heartache.

I played in a covers band for a few years that had two bass players, doing standard top 40, corporate and weddings etc and it worked well once we got the hang of each others playing style and "roles" on the bass.
I don't actually agree with your "I can't" line of thought as it can be done but I don't think the 8 string is the only issue here, it sounds like the other points you mentioned also have a part to play in it all as well.

My 2 cents of course.. but there is no point on being unhappy and I know from experience that when you get to where you are in a band then is the beginning of the end.

Good luck with it all, I hope out works out!

What's your next move? Do you have some material ready to start your own band?

well honestly i have quite a bit of material that ive never been able to use. maybe ill start my own band. maybe ill try to find an existing band. idk. for now im going to go with the flow. it just feels weird because this is the first time in a long time that i havent belonged to a band.

i wish them the best. i hope they do well and succeed with everything that they do. i hold absolutely no ill will towards them.
