Thats exactly how I see it.
If Im playing with 3 other guys, and those 3 all want to play Rockabilly music, but I dont, then Im not a good fit for this particular group of guys.
Theyre not wrong for wanting to play rockabilly, and Im not wrong for not wanting to play rockabilly. But, I better find another group of people to play with.

I think you all(OP included) are overestimating the ramifications of simply having a lower string on the guitar. It's not like he has to play that string at all times, for every song. It's just another tonal POSSIBILITY in his tool belt. Plus if it really does sound muddy and horrible you can cross that bridge when you get there.

If you want to leave a band you love for such a petty reason, be my guest i suppose.

+1. I agree with Matticus. It sounds like you are happy with the band. Me, I wouldnt be happy with this at all. Open mindedness goes a very long way in a band. Hell, its a must have IMO. But when you arent really contributing nearly as much as you feel you are capable of, then maybe you arent with the right group of people to play music with. I do have to agree with you, playing in those octaves is ridiculous. But to each his own. s@*t or get off the pot, thats mu advice. Dont leave it up to them.

A lower string which will essentially allow the guitarist the ability to go as low as a 4-string bass. A guitar going that low essentially means anything he plays the bass will have to play, too, otherwise you're going to be stuck with a jumbled mess of parts that sound horrible together. The bassist could go high when that happens, but if that's not the bassists bag then it's his right to say, "I'm out." No need to be insulting if you don't see the legitimacy behind that thought.

I understand that, but it's not my point. It all boils down to a simple thing, IMO. regardless of what you think of the OPs attitude or reason, he desperately does not want something his bandmates do, and it seems unresolvable on both sides. Better to part ways now and let both sides get on.

Wasn't trying to insult you personally, i apologize. Just the idea of it all strikes as a bit weird to me. Wanted to at least throw my opinion in the mix. Just seems like we're making a lot of huge assumptions here and coming to conclusions on assumptions is never a good thing.

We don't know how this particular guy is gonna use this guitar or how the band will sound. That's a fact. Somehow it's just assumed it will sound bad, but i am not willingly to make that assumption. I think a metal band would actually sound really heavy with an 8 string guitar, and that's why they exist in the first place. It really COULD work, but we'll never know i suppose.

I get you, and that's why I never commented on the sound or what would or would not happen, just on the bare situation itself.

Extended range guitars and downtuning are not really my thing either, but if done properly(by people who ALL want to do it) interesting things might result. I won't deny that. And I suppose if I felt I still could contribute something interesting bass wise in such a band, I would probably give it a shot.

But, simply put, the OP didn't want to do it, and a total impasse in a band is never a good thing. Better to move on. I would, if I really felt that strongly about anything that put me at odds with a band.

Don't worry about it and enjoy the break. Work on your own stuff and when you're ready to do whatever comes next you'll be refreshed.

Is this the first time you've had serious issues to the point that you're ready to almost quit? That's a lot of time invested. I would hope they'd see your side and work with you a little and not against you and take what your opinion is to heart. It's a give and take. If they are just taking from you all the time, well......... I hope you work it out. It would suck to drop out of a band youve been with for two years with all those good times due to the issue you're having now.

well the thing is, i know what its like to be on their side. maybe not with this particular issue, but issues are issues and need to be worked out. some times people have to split off and go down different paths.

it wasnt solely this issue. it was just the last straw.
