GK 1001 RB II issues

“Hosing things down” with miracle cure-all spray is the other thing professional techs dread. Depending on the substances and carriers, it can get into places that never should, and it can also seriously damage plastics like relay and connector housings, switch components, pots, and some display windows.

I see that you have a negative impression of techs. If that’s what you have been told (your words), I’m pretty sure I know why. ;)
 
Yeah, I hosed it down with CRC contact cleaner, then I lit a cigarette whilst using the can as a flamethrower. I made sure to spray a liberal amount and get it all over the entire preamp board and all over my dinner table that I definitely did not clean up, then I used a rag soaked in linseed oil to rub the CRC juice in. Don't worry, I made sure to rinse it off with water to ensure that any solvent that hadn't evaporated would get washed away.

In some point me as a professional, working for manufacturer would let it be and stop writing to DIY project topics (or forums) if I was not helping the OPs with their projects. Otherwise it would give negative impression about me in the end when people were not willing to do how manufacturers intended things to be done (approved workshops etc.).

For OP, I understand your project target as amp is not worth of taking to the tech and even you make it worse it does not cost anything for you. Just keep yourself safe in your project.

P.S. I work in service tech support team for high tech company manufacturing electronics, and argued once privately with DIY person in another forum and noticed it is not worth when my advice is not needed nor wanted.

Sorry you feel so bitter about advice. Had you followed several suggestions to try bypassing the effects loop you could have avoided most of the drama. That’s one of the first steps a qualified tech would do, look for signal at the effects send jack which identified if the problem is in the preamp or power amp section. THEN, if the preamp tests good, would have injected a signal into the effects send (power amp in) jack to see if the power amp is good, then jumped the loop and verified that the problem had been identified.

So glad I didn't take it to a tech who would probably overcharge me and tell me I'm stupid for trying to take it apart to begin with.

No I really don't have time to go around arguing with techs. I actually thought some techs would know enough to maybe help me with this poopie.
Actually several did try to help you (not just me), yet all you did was disagree or argue with them, all of them. Their advice was in fact good and correct.

Go play some bass.
 
For people trained and experienced in electronics it is often easy to spot those who are not, just by what they say and how they say it. Having no experience as a bricklayer, I would never approach a bricklayer and start throwing around terminology from his trade when discussing work I need done. He'll see through me in an instant. How would any of you here feel about someone who has little or no training and experience in your line of work, acting as if they did?

Since I'm not in the business of repairing amps I have no skin in the game, I have nothing to gain by suggesting that someone seek out the services of a qualified technician. I make these suggestion because of the possible adverse outcomes that may occur with untrained, unskilled repair attempts.

The potential exposure to lethal voltages.
The possibility of doing more harm than good.
The likelihood that a tech will not want to work on something after having been "worked" on by an amateur.
The cost of repairs may increase, due to repairing the original problem plus other damage done.

So here are some tips for those who want advice when needing amp repairs.

1) If you intend to try a DIY repair, please let us know your training, experience and skill level in troubleshooting and repair of electronics. This helps us to better assess your abilities and advise accordingly.

2) Describe the symptoms, don't guess at the cause. Would you go to your doctor and tell him you have this affliction, or that disease? Or would you tell him the symptoms and let him work through to a diagnosis.

3) If you don't like what you are being told, just thank the person for their advice and find someone else. Remember, the advice you get here is free. And my opinion is that in most cases, that advice is worth much more than what you paid. You do have the right to consider that the advice is ONLY worth what you paid.

4) If you are not willing to spend any money on these repairs, let us know. In my case, rather than suggest you take it to a tech (because I sense you are not up to the task) I, personally, would likely pass on responding at all.

5) "There are no user serviceable parts inside." This is the case for most modern amps except for things like replacing fuses or pre-amp tubes. These warnings are to protect the user. In the days when all amps were built with tubes and point to point wiring, they were much easier to service. This "easy to fix" attitude has never changed. What has changed is how amps are built these days. What seems like advantages to the ordinary user often make amps exceedingly more difficult to repair, even for qualified techs. PC board work requires special care. Integrated circuits and surface mount devices are exponentially more difficult to replace, and can easily be damaged when doing so. The many features found in modern amps coupled with reduced size means packing things more closely together. This makes access to parts more difficult. How many would-be DIY techs would also be willing to attempt component level repairs on the motherboard of their computer?

6) Ask questions. Don't make statements. The only dumb question is the one never asked. If you make a statement it is incumbent upon you to back it up. If you ask a question, you are putting the other person in the position to back up their response. Who would you rather have be in the hot seat?

7) Be respectful of those offering advise. Not because they may have decades of experience in repairing amps. Rather because it is the proper way to behave in a community. If you disagree, that's OK, but disagree in a respectful way. Don't resort to name calling or accusations. When you do that, you reveal more about your own character than you do about the other person. How do you want the rest of the community to perceive you?

Here's what I was able to learn about maintaining Gallien Krueger amps at home as an owner:

  1. The jacks may prematurely wear from corrosion. Test the FX return, not just the input. CRC contact cleaner might fix the problem temporarily, but the jacks will need to be replaced. Don't use Deoxit because it leaves a residue. CRC is better because the solvent evaporates.
  2. Preamp board can short out, come ungrounded, and some solder can crack over time.
  3. There are thin jumper wires connecting the preamp board to the main board and those can wear or short out.
  4. The chassis top appears to make contact with the fan that is bolted to the heatsink. That exposes the main board to movement and so solder can crack in some areas. This is why I started my inspection with the main board based on what produced the issues.
  5. Toroidal Transformer can short out, or even come loose because of the nylon nut and send the power to the chassis. I found one example where it touched a screw bolting the preamp shield down.
  6. The 1/4 speaker output jacks on the back are also prone to corrosion and failure.
  7. Definitely do not spray anything inside of potentiometers because you will ruin the feel, like the previous owner did on my EQ stack, to my dismay (I just discovered/asked about this).
  8. Not sure if GK carries parts for discontinued products, but I was able to find replacement parts on a site called AllCompass.
That's the info I was seeking when I came here asking questions. Hope it helps someone. Some of those repairs are simple, some are not. If you try them yourself of course exercise caution and proceed at your own risk. Yes electrical repairs can be dangerous, obviously professional help is available. Stay safe and don't ride the lightning.

I decided to take this risk because I have performed a lot of basic maintenance on my own personal gear in the last decade, and I have been a musician for 2 decades, and have become familiar with the gear that I own to some extent. I have repaired Hartke and Fender amps, DOD pedals, and some other equipment as well. I've serviced over 16 guitars, replaced pickups, potentiometers, capacitors, resistors, transformers, input/output jacks on amps and cabs, and speakers. There are things I would never touch. I will never bother with tube amps. I will always take those to a tech. I have some very expensive amps that get serviced by a tech I trust. Before maintaining my music gear, I started with automotive. I am also a software developer.

excellent piece of advice, not only when getting advice but for everything in life imo.

It’s my understanding you can coax some sound out of these components by repeatedly jamming a fork thru the chassis vents, hence the term “stick a fork in it”. Works with toasters & English muffins.

Question - I get a lot of PM's and comments from TB members who appreciate and value the discussions that come out of troubleshooting, the steps that are taken (and why), and why not to do things so that they don't make the same mistakes. There are a number of members who follow me (and a few other technically oriented members here) because they are trying to learn more about an aspect of this industry that is difficult to get good information on.

I'm sensitive to this, because I still do some tech training and I write a lot of service manuals. Some of these discussions have cause me to alter how I write service information because I never would have thought to do things as dangerous or illogical as what I sometimes see in the discussions.

Aren't these discussions part of being a (useful) contributor to the forum rather than just a taker? I know that I am not alone here, I have had discussions with some of the pro techs here (and have worked with a few too) and for us "older guys", you know who you are, paying it forward is part of the "brotherhood", just as we all had folks in our past who paid it forward to us.

It seems to be more about the attitude than the information. Just because somebody doesn't like the information provided (ESPECIALLY when it's safety related), and the information is technically accurate, doesn't make the messenger wrong.

This might be worthwhile discussion to have IMO.
 
When I was much younger I should have looked for products that had the screw heads I’ll say mid-shaped so I couldn’t open whatever it was, like apple stuff I hear. I knew I couldn’t fix “it” but I wanted to look anyway. I got over that thanks to Mr Electric Shock. Have at it !
