GK MB 200: Part Two

My Ampeg Micro VR went to bass amp heaven and can no longer produce any noise(wonderful noise at that!). Found a video on youtube with similar issues (powers on but no noise through cabinet but works using headphones)

After a long research, I made up my mind to purchase this amp after reading part 1 and part 2 of this thread ;)

Arriving this coming Thursday from Sweetwater. Will update with pics/setup!

Been wanting an MB200 for quite some time... had an MB500- was sorry I got rid of it... picked one up- a few weeks back! I've been using it with an Aguilar GS-112 (also with 2-GS112's). Recently picked up a couple Fender Rumble 115's... the MB200 does a nice job powering one (or both) of those! I not wild about the GK tone- but since I can toss it in my gig bag- ya can't beat it!!

My personal take/review after receiving the adapter:

•This amp head packs a punch! I feel as if it is more powerful than the Micro VR. Despite being only one volume control button(gain). At 9'clock it felt louder than the Micro VR when both volume/gain pot is placed at 1'clock (when it was working/what I remembered ;p).

•Very clean almost unfiltered sound. It almost plays like my headphone practice amp on the same settings (active/passive) mode but with a little more depth. Maybe I haven't tinkered enough on the EQ/settings but it certainly produces a cleaner tone comapared to the Micro VR(I would assume this is the difference when folks say Ampeg produces a more "colored" tone when compared to GK amps).

This my two main noticeable/opinion difference coming from a Micro VR. I am very pleased and would like to thank the folks who were in part 1 and 2 of this thread(convinced me to purchased it even before trying!) Thanks!

I picked one of these up a couple of years ago on a whim. It ended up powering my church gig 1x10 (Len Moskowitz design with a replacement BP102-4 speaker) cab. It sounds great to my ears. So great that on another whim I picked up a second. I'm currently designing a pair of cabs to go with them. I'm really thrilled with these little amps!

After reading this thread ... I picked up an MB200. Had a chance to A/B compare it with my 800RB with same CAB in same setting. I was REALLY impressed ... but it did NOT hang with the 800 rb (at approx. same power/volume settings). Convenience factor alone MB200 will be a keeper for me.

Not sure I can describe it accurately. But the MB just seemed fatter and less defined and less "punch" than the 800rb. I made the "volume or loudness" as close to the same as I could detect. I set the "tone" as close to the same as I could detect and was able to get pretty similar tones out of the two configurations. But when the band was playing ... I lost the MB200 in the mix and had to jack up the "input volume" or gain to clearly hear what notes I was playing. With the 800 rb bass just seemed to be more "clear" in the mix and didn't need stage level bass volume as high. Please note that I was judging this standing in close proximity to my cabinets which are just used as my bass monitor and front of house sound. A larger PA system fills the rest of the venue.

For what it's worth it's an awesome little head. This thing will greatly simplify my life from Convenience of DI (wet / dry), headphones etc. etc.

So I just received my MB200. I bought it as a back up amp/practice station. The only downside I see is it has a pretty good hiss going on regardless of volume level. Is this normal? or do I have a faulty unit? It has much more his than my RBI/Carvin DCML2000 and that is volume dependent.

I will say also that this little amp kicks through my big cab. (4 ohm) Through my 12/6 (8 ohm) it would be a good acoustic head, or with a low volume band that has a drummer with a light touch.

I'm thinking of two rumble 15s running off the mb200- how's it working for you?
