Double Bass GK MB150E Vs Acoustic Image

IMHO The Design differences between the Contra and the MBE really put the amps into different use catagories. Acoustic Image amps are designed to give you all the bells and whistles you need with the Double Bass, Notch Filters, Hi Pass Filters, Dual use inputs for microphones and pickups, three way speaker cab and two independent channels. While The MBE is a doubling amplifier minus the second channel that works well with either the Double Bass or the Electric Bass but dosen't have all the flexibility of the Contra. There is also a fairly significant difference between the cost of the two units. The two things that they share in common are small size and light weight. Both amps are good units but they sound very different. So it's really hard (at least for me) put them side by side and evaluate which ones the one for you unless doubling is you're priority or you wan't the A. I. neutral tone quality.

I have a much newer contra ( actually it's a coda, but it's pretty much the same thing) than most of the people replying to this will have had.

The GK sounds great, but definitely colours the sound, and is not as useful as a monitor as the sound varies from point to point in the room, especially up close.

The Acoustic image is almost transparent, and twice as loud, and the preamp deals with my David gauge better than my GK ever did. The down firing speaker also results in a more uniform sound across the stage and around the room.

For me, it's no contest, apart from the GK seems to be considerably more reliable from a build point of view.
