GK NEO 412 for black/doommetal

Due to lower back pain and try to avoid hauling my cab up and down the stairs of the rehearsal place; I'm looking for some lighter options.

I've had the Marshall DBS 7412, killer cab but too heavy and unpractical to load/unload. Now I have a Peavey TVX 412, killer cab too, lighter than the Marshall but still unpractical.

I've set my mind on the Gallien-Krueger Neo 412, which is less heavy compared to the Marshall and Peavey cabs. The problem is, I can't really find lots of reviews or youtube video's online.

I play mainly black metal with a touch of doom, I prefer a fat and filthy sound. Nothing too crisp; but also nothing like Sunn 0))) subsonic terror.

I have an Ampeg SVT7-Pro, and play with a Fender Geddy Lee jazz bass, Squier Troy Sanders Jaguar (loaded with EMG GZR pickups) or my Gibson RD Krist Novoselic. Effectswise I use a Tech21 VT Bass DI, EHX bass muff deluxe and occasionally a EHX bassclone or Boss Flanger.

The only thing I can find on youtube is this: but that's completely not my sound or style.

Is anyone using the GK Neo 412 for metal or sludge or stonerrock purposes? And what are your experiences? Someone told me the GK NEO 410 sounds louder and deeper than the 412.

There's no one around where I live (Belgium) to go test the cab; and I want to avoid ordering it from Thomann or Musicstore and just having to send it back when I'm not pleased with it.

Though I have no experience with them, I would say a GK Neo 412 would work fine for you. The 410 world probably be fine too. I run a 212 quite often and love it.

My regular rig is a NEO 412 and 1001RB-II for my hard rock band. It is somewhat of a modern-sounding cab; it's very well balanced with a slight bump to the mids to my ears. However, I've had lots of success getting a pretty punchy low-mid tone out of it with the right EQing. If you need to cut through a mix, then it's certainly a good cab to consider. However, I don't really think of the NEO 412 as sounding anything like Marshall, Ampeg, Orange, or similar cabs from the 'giant cab era'.

Although the NEO 412 is fairly light for a 4x12 cab, I would get two NEO 212's instead if I could do it all over again.

In terms of a comparison to the NEO 410: I had both the 410 and 412 at my rehearsal space for a brief time. IMO, the 412 sounded louder, more balanced, and more bass-responsive than the 410.

I have one of these cabinets and can say I don’t play that kind of music but I’m aware of the sound you are after.

Just a heads up that cabinet is still just under 100lbs so take into consideration. However I feel they move around easy.

This cab would be excellent for that type of music, you just need to dial back the tweeter...I would start with the horn up only a quarter of the way to cut that GK clarity.

The GK NEO 12s are on the flattish side so I think this is would be Up you’re alley.

That cab has lot of girth to it.

I would say the 412 is a great cab for metal in general. Like mentioned above, just dial back the tweeter otherwise it can be pretty bright. But plenty of volume and low end and metric F tons of mids to be had. I haven't had mine long, but the one gig I've done with it was a metal gig (basicallymodern mainstream metal with some gothy and proggy elements), and it worked great. I powered it with my Genz ShuttleMax 9.2 (900w with a FET channel and a tube channel that I used for some OD/distortion). This was at a sort of "throwback" 80s style club with a giant old school horn style PA and a deaf sound guy and it kept up just fine and sounded killer.

For doomier stuff you probably want to back off the tweeter. But I find the upper mids and highs generally to have a very natural sound to them even when on the brighter side, that makes my active 6 string sound a little more organic than usual. It should pair well with the 7 Pro, especially with the gain cranked up a bit and some compression, tweeter rolled off a ways, and just the right amount of low mid scoop and some fuzz.

Ahhh, very useful! Thanks a lot! I will most likely give the 412 a try and order it... Only the looks of it makes me kinda drool already :)
