Glarry Bass MODS!!

Bass is new to me so I am watching this thread. On a guitar my first would be replacing the plastic nut with a Tusq, then bridge (assuming tuning pegs were serviceable), after the bridge I'd do the pickups, pots capacitors if I wasn't getting the sound I wanted.

That's just me YMMV.

I put a set of Bill Lawrence P46 pickups and Gunstreet wiring harness/pots in my Glarry "P"bass. I also took off the original strings and put Ernie Ball 40-95s on it. It's a BEAST. I also dressed up the fret ends, polished the back of the neck (kept it satin though), oiled the fingerboard, cut the nut slots and lubed them, adjusted the truss rod and lubed the gears on the tuners. Intonation was good from the factory. The bass is a dream to play being since it's so light, has a really good action and sounds AMAZING. I paid about $72 including tax and shipping for the bass. The pickups and wiring harness were about $110, so total cost is around $180. I may do a custom paint job. Then again, I may not.

Below is my Glarry "P" bass with all the mods I mentioned. Did I mention it's a BEAST? Second pic is of the Bill Lawrence P46 pickups and the third pic is a comparison of the Gunstreet wiring harness with the stock harness. The little 60w Hartke is one of the best sounding amps I've had too. A lot of amps have come and gone around here but that one stays. I'll take a number please!

I feel like I am reaching my question limit here. So before I get thrown into TalkBass forum jail, here is another one. If you were modifying a Glarry Jazz Bass (moving towards a more Fender(est) type Jazz), What would you replace, and in want order (most important first). Pickups and Electronics are a given. Beyond that, is it bridge, tuning pegs, etc. OK gotta run, I think I see the TalkBass police with a warrant in hand!!!!

Peace Out!!

Keep thumpin!!!

I bought a Glarry J just looking for an inexpensive bass for recording. Like everyone says, the neck is thick, a lot like a P bass. The neck doesn’t bother me. I did apply Watco natural which is a great product. The springs under the pickups were not in place and each was missing two of four. They are low output but fairly adequate. During the process I also straightened the neck and removed a factory shim. These measures provided a decent and playable action. For under a $100, if you know how to set one up they will get you by. I’m not into throwing money at it or I would have spent more to begging with. I do agree pickups and pots would be the first thing if I did. That’s my 2 cents.

whoops!

i'm replacing several things for the 'looks', but i'll be changing:
- the neck: i can't abide the glarry version of a P-bass neck = i'll be installing a J-style neck
- the bridge (i already had a schaller 3D bridge...so i'll go with that)
- the electronics: modestly priced upgrades: pickups and pre-amp

i just posted these in another thread...you might want to take a look:

Well, I'm a bit late, but haven't been late for dinner in some time.

I'm a jazz guitar player with some bass chops. I usually practice and record a song for about a month, then the bass goes back in the closet for long periods. I decided my neglected MIJ Fender Photoflame needed a closet mate in the form of a fretless. Alas, my Gibson L5 isn't as loquacious as my J-Bass would like.

Glarry hasn't had much of a selection of fretless basses for the last few weeks. As you noticed, they don't seem to even offer a J-Bass in fretless form. I bought the Glarry II upgraded J-Bass, and ordered one of those gorgeous super cheap, fretless J-bass maple necks on ebay. I also bought a set of neck shims from StewMac, and a set of Gold-White tape LaBellas. Also bought a gorgeous blue pickguard. Kindly wish me luck.

I would have rather bought a used Cort B4 Fretless Open Pore, none available right now.

well then, best of good luck! ;)

i know nothing of the glarry II models (except what is advertised) as all of mine are the "original" models. since i only use the bodies (because they're lightweight, poly-finished) i have to supply the other parts --- and i go for the lightweight hardware, too, with some exceptions --- but i'm using the usual suspects in the 'premium' categories (schaller, hipshot, gotoh, etc.) for my assemblies.

there are folks on this forum who poo-poo those ebay necks, but most of the detractors have no personal experience with them and the very few that do apparently aren't clever enough to resolve issues when they find them. know this: the side dots on those necks are in the fretted positions (all of mine were!) so you'll have to relocate those. other than that: all six of my chinese-made ebay necks have been stellar! i'm really picky about my EB necks (i've only played fretless for 50 years, most of that full-time musician) and they're just as serviceable as any other neck i've ever purchased (e.g., allparts, eden, etc.).

check out the glarry club (as noted above by @B-Mac) as there's a lot of great info there...scattered among the frivolous stuff --- but you can chime in with questions and get experience/perspective/advice.

again, good luck with your assemblies and mods --- and here's some pics of a few of my glarry-based players (these are serious instruments) just to get you excited about your project! FWIW: all of them sport the necks we're referencing!

No . I want mod my Glarry gjazz bass with a better neck and curious as to what fits. Thread is labeled Glarry bass MODS.
Yes, and you’ll get a shizz load more responses from the members of that club as they all more than likely get a notification when someone posts there.

Almost everyone in that club tinkers with their Glarry.
