I feel like I am reaching my question limit here. So before I get thrown into TalkBass forum jail, here is another one. If you were modifying a Glarry Jazz Bass (moving towards a more Fender(est) type Jazz), What would you replace, and in want order (most important first). Pickups and Electronics are a given. Beyond that, is it bridge, tuning pegs, etc. OK gotta run, I think I see the TalkBass police with a warrant in hand!!!!

Peace Out!!

Keep thumpin!!!

If you were modifying a Glarry Jazz Bass....
ha! well: i'm modding a glarry P-bass right now, and here's my take on that ax:
- tuning machines are cheap but functional
- electronics are lacking (re: my preferences) but gig-able if you don't expect/need much
- a good setup is mandatory!
- looks: ?

here are a couple of threads --- there are more! --- which might give you some ideas:
NBD --- the Glarry Bass Club! ha!

https://www.talkbass.com/threads/exquisite-bass-how-are-they-compared-to-glarry-bass.1408484/

OP: no need to duck for cover = this joint is populated by all kinds of folks, including but not limited to: snobs, newbies, wannabes, artists, professionals, and players --- all kinds! bottom line: if the piece feels right and sounds good to you = priceless! good luck with your mods and please share your ideas/results!

You didn't recommend replacing anything. Does that mean you wouldn't?

whoops!

i'm replacing several things for the 'looks', but i'll be changing:
- the neck: i can't abide the glarry version of a P-bass neck = i'll be installing a J-style neck
- the bridge (i already had a schaller 3D bridge...so i'll go with that)
- the electronics: modestly priced upgrades: pickups and pre-amp

i just posted these in another thread...you might want to take a look:
NGBD - New Glarry Bass Day!
Exquisite Bass. How are they compared to Glarry Bass ?

keep me/us posted on your ideas and efforts! thanks. good luck!

Actually, to jump in here, these vary somewhat. I also have a Glarry P. My tuners are fine but my pups are low output. Neck (1.67” W & 0.88” T) and frets are fine on mine with no sharp edges.
Planning to put these in

Hoping to get a Glarry Jazz in Burlywood, but they sell out quickly.

You might want to check one of these out also

The Glabinez or Exquisite-ez

No experience with the Glarry basses, but as long as the saddles don’t move around on the bridge it’s probably adequate. Pickups, wiring and pots are probably as cheap as it gets and would be good candidates for replacing. Tuners these days are generally up to the task. There’s not much else you can do without getting much deeper into things such as fretwork etc. Learning how to do your own setups will help you get the playability on point.

I do my own setups now. I have rebuilt a few basses. I guess what I was asking is WHAT mods people would recommend for the Glarry Jazz bass. I am planning to go a little overboard. Even thinning the neck.
Installing a preamp would probably fit in your criteria. If you thin the neck you really have to clear coat it afterwards as oil is not a great vapour barrier. I can’t think of anything else that hasn’t already been said, except for cosmetics like a pickguard etc.

Now we are cooking with gas! Regarding a pre-amp, I was thinking of staying passive (I am a bit concerned about the cavity space), but totally re-wiring and replacing pickups. About the neck, i was gonna go with several coats of Tru-oil, final sealed off with the wax. Do you think this would be enough?

I am gonna replace the bridge. At first I wanted to go with a HiMass or Omega type bridge. I wanted to go here for two reasons, 1) it is a much better bridge, 2) these basses tend to be a little neck heavy, and light. I figured a better, heavier bridge would help. However, in my reasearch I am hearing a lot about these bridges raising sting height to undesirable levels. So if I do replace it, I am going with a standard jazz bridge. I don't want to use a fender (brand) bridge. I don't want to use anything that says "Fender" for fear of being accused of trying to deceive anybody. Any suggestions for a good/excellent brand?

Tru-oil will be fine for the neck. If you get to thinning it before I do mine, please share your experience!

Any top load bridge, in my opinion, would be convenient. Your idea about shifting weight to the body is a good one.

As long as you don't try selling it as a Fender, who cares? I doubt anyone would think our Glarry basses are Fenders.

the machine heads absolutely the weakest link on these basses. the next thing would be the bridge imo I have a P I had no issue with the Pickup volume or tone. I used white grease on the machine heads right out of the box. I have machine heads in waiting, but no free time to change them out yet :(
I have gig with the bass several times and it sounded great in the mix so pickups are staying

If you did run into any problems with a replacement bridge raising your action unacceptably high, you can add a full length shim in the neck pocket or use a router and sink the bridge into the body slightly. There should be tons of room, if you stick with a pickguard, to chisel or route enough space for a preamp underneath it. This photo shows a cheap Chinese bass that I made a thick billet brass bridge for. I sunk it into the body to get more adjustability from it.
