gmail invites

well, I can't think of any of the webmail services that are truly free.
Yahoo, hotmail etc all have advertising. Very rarely is there a free lunch.

At least with gmail there are no pop-ups, and the ads are discreet. I READ the privacy policy before signing up, few people do, and decided I was willing to make the tradeoff. If you aren't willing to make those tradeoffs, don't use it. It's as simple as that.

yahoo mail is a good alternative at this point I think. They are now offering 100megs of storage space. No, it's not a gig...but it's a whole lotta mail. I have 5 megs on my current lycos account and I rarely run over. When I do I just have to take a bit of time to cull through all the old emails and delete what I no longer need (there's usually a lot of that). I'll probably eventually switch over to yahoo mail.

so, let me get this straight.
google has an email that hasn't started yet to the public, that reads your emails and sends you emails that have links relevent to what you typed in your email message?
not quite. Discreet text ads are displayed on the right hand side of the screen. I find them much less instrusive than the ads on other services.

I like it because it has cool features like conversation threading, although I'm not completely sold on using it as a primary email address.

I have a gmail account. The only emails that are sent there are the things that I want to store. I send all the things that I use on my site, like backup files, php.files, and random pictures, or graphics. Things that I don't really want to loose. I even have zipped music files saved there. Why not use the space there instead of on my hard drive (Not that I don't have enough room)

I've crashed my computer to many times, I got tired of having to start over.

I am not even sure about all this... i think that website is waay over-reacting... i ma look into this... i really dont think its that bad or true to that extend...

I mean, hotmail and yahoomail scans your email for viruses... CREEEEEPY CREEPY CREEPY...

beh i dont think that url is worth much to even pay attention too...

I personally would not change my domain + server for anything yahoo/hotmail/gmail or any other... much better...

Cheers

Exactly.

I do NOT receive spam emails at my Gmail account... only the targeted advertisements, which as David said, are not nearly as intrusive as other sites. I also have accounts at Yahoo and Juno, and those ads are much MUCH more annoying. Sure, it's possible the Gmail ads will get worse once the product is established, but it's possible it might not.

I have sent maybe 2 emails from my Yahoo account, and I've never used it for any contests or listed as a primary for any forum/business, yet I get bombed with spam there. I've been using Gmail as primary for over a month, and get no spam (aside from annoying lowballers and overseas scammers responding to my classified ads). Yahoo gives me 100 megs, but I'll still take Gmail.

What happens with Google is that the search engine scans the email to determine what ads are appropriate... humans aren't reading the mail. With Juno, I have to answer a 12,000 question survey and I only get 2 megs storage. I'll take Gmail.

Sure, my opinion might change if the Gmail service changes. But despite anti-Google hysterics, I'm sticking with it. If I was planning any terrorist activity I suppose I'd have cause for concern, but at this time that does not apply. ;)

I've been with Gmail a few months now and have only received two invites to send out... what's up with that? :hmm:

I've got gmail, and I enjoy it a lot. I'm going to use Hotmail for personal use and my gmail as a musical/theatrical contact. In either case, just don't be stupid about what's in your e-mails and you should be fine -- then again, that's true of ANY service.
