As for cabs and stage presence VS direct to PA. I'd always bring my rig. There's nothing like the feeling of the stack vibrating your knees before it goes out front. You can't get that if you go direct to PA.
Furthermore the tone of cabs is just way better than generic PA subs, and I keep the control over the EQ'd sound rather than risking a dodgy sound engineer ...
One last thing, we're bass players, it's part of the job to deal with moving big heavy boxes around all the time. Same even if you play Jazz on an upright you gotta haul that crazy big case everywhere.
keep it big keep it heavy and move the AIR ! look at how the reggae soundsystems operate no-one complains that there's too many big speakers !
