Going 5-string: TRBX or BroadBass?

I'm a newcomer to bass. I bought a TRBX604FM, and I really enjoy this instrument! But... Now I want a 5-string for some of the songs I want to play. I want to get some opinions.

Here's my thought process:

TRBX605FM: The 5-string version of the bass I already have. Familiar feel and sound.

BB735A: The BroadBass, as you all probably know, is a more "classic" style bass, a spitting image of a Fender. It's got P/J pickups, but does still have the Active/Passive circuit and 3-band EQ. Other notable differences are the way the neck is attached with six screws instead of four (with two at an angle), and it's strung thru-body. I don't know if that has any tangible benefit or if it's marketing fluff... Curious to know!

So... Should I get the 5-string version of the bass I have to keep tone consistent, or should I use the opportunity of a new bass to expand my tonal palette? I've looked through this forum and it appears both models are very well-liked; neither seems to be "better" than the other.

Also, if anyone owns a BB734/5A in the matte black, can you tell me if the matte finish holds up, or will it develop shiny spots? (I HATE SHINY SPOTS ON MATTE FINISHES!)

Welcome to TalkBass.

You've obviously done a fair amount of research. I honestly don't think you can go wrong with either option. But as a BB owner, I will cast my vote in that camp. The primary reason is due to the BB's ability to achieve a very convincing Fender-ish P bass tone – something that you may find desirable at some point down the road, depending upon what your aspirations might be.

Best of luck whichever way you decide to go.
