After all you will be running into a console with more EQ control to boot, you just need to find a workable bass tone to send to FOH.
I always ran my signal flat, slight bass boost and the drive boosted and the blend wide open to the tube side. 3 gigs in a row the sound guys came up and said "All bass players should run direct with a Sans Amp!"
On the flip side I went to a church here 2 weeks ago and the bass was run direct with a Sans Amp, and it sounded phenomenal!
I've gone amp less for about 6 months (VT Bass Deluxe direct into PA). Gigged 3 times, plus weekly rehearsals, and I really don't miss an amp at all.
This is how I ended up the other night. Set up right next to the drummer's hi-hat with one sub right behind us. It was also my first shot at IEMs. I spent the whole night frankly shocked at how good everything sounded/felt. I agree with DonaldR, this is how I want to do every gig.

Any solid state amp with DI out should work, but it never hurts to double check the manual. I used my Shuttle 6 as a DI/personal headphone monitor setup for a run of Hairspray last summer and it worked great. I've also done the same with my PF500 for a couple random gigs and both have been great options.

Surely not the same thing as 'boosting the mids', though? Wouldn't you just be better revealing the mids there were already present in your signal?

I should say I've used the Sansamp BDI and VT bass as well as a Raven Labs PMB for ampless/direct to PA gigging and they all worked great. Lots of options here- it's pretty much about picking the device that will give you the tone you want.
I have been using the SansAmp ParaDriver DI for a while now, both direct to FOH and powering an amp, pending on the situation. Works pretty well for me, but as our sets expand, so do my needs for tone variety, so I just got a VT Bass Deluxe today.after reading this thread I decided to go revisit my Amplitube for iPad and purchased the B15R amp model.
WOW I am extremely impressed with the tonality and range of sounds in this virtual amplifier. It would actually be quite useable for a live gig as well as a project studio.
I never really got into Amplitube for iPad because I don't care much for the stock bass amp model that was included and I didn't know they released the B15R until reading this thread. There are some small details that are weird with the model though.
For instance, the ULTA Hi and Low switches a actually opposite of what they indicate i.e. the ultra low switch is actually the hi switch and vice versa.
Also the On/Off toggle is reversed. You toggle "Off" to turn the amp on. I don't know what these functions are reversed and I don't know that it is like this for everyone, but it certainly is the case for my copy.

The tracking on the Octaver is a joke, but there are uses for it (I'm just still looking for them!!).
The envelope filter has its uses but don't try to use it for autowah effects, it'll just suck. I use it as a notch filter of sorts, not always on but for a secondary tone. It's just ok.
The real key to success with AT iOS is the mastering section. Don't use the compressor pedals. Instead use the compressor built into the mastering section, it sounds GREAT and really makes AT come alive.

I've done several shows with my bass (Roscoe with 3 band eq) into my PT Nano with tuner, Phase 90, EBS OCtave, and Catlinbread clean/dirty boost, into a JDI. The eq on the bass does the job nicely.
A couple of weeks ago, I picked up an AER Amp 3. I'm going to try it on a rock gig as a monitor, facing back at me, with DI out from it.

I may have to go ampless, or bassless soon because I'll be homeless in 14 days. While you guys debate it for fun, some of us do it out of necessity.

Yeah I'm kinda burned about this situation myself. I'm running Amplitube iOS on an iPhone 4S, but plan on buying an iPad to free up my phone for.. Phone stuff.
Now I find out that I gotta buy all this **** AGAIN?!? IK has already greased me for the app once. I've got all the in-app stuff, probably close to $150 invested total, and if I switch to an iPad I gotta start over??
The iPhone 4S is a powerful machine. I guess if it all comes down to it, I really don't need an iPad.

Ouch, that's a pretty hefty chunk to have to re-buy if you switch. At least you wouldn't have to re-buy the interface. But still, that really sucks. Too bad IK doesn't let you download the iPad version of the app if you already have the iPhone version. I wonder if you could just use the iPhone version on an iPad... You know, and hit the 2x button like in other apps. The screen would be lower resolution, but wouldn't the audio be the same?

My best effort at going ampless and still sounding like I've got an amp is with the Line 6 Bass Pod. I tried it once, to avoid having to lug my rig up two flights of stairs, and it sounded great. So I tried it a 2nd time on an outdoor stage at a festival. And again is sounded great. I use the Pod on those occasions where load in/out is brutal. But otherwise I use my MB rig.
