There is an indoor flea market near me that has been there for ever and they used to have a bluegrass band play every sunday. The bass player looked like father time himself and he played a wash tub bass. He used to walk lines against chords like nobodies business, it was awesome. He's the only guy I've ever seen make one sound like a legit instrument

I'm thinking about picking up a Squier Classic Vibe 70's P-Bass and a Vintage Modified Jazz Bass.

I'm not opposed to something higher end.

What would you buy with $1400?

$1400 - at GC in store credit - which means RETAIL...
Well, can they let you shop on the used gear web site? If so, you can get some decent kit.
Otherwise - yikes. I suppose a MIA J bass or a EBMM sterling H. That's about it.

Me, I'd buy one $1400 instrument over three ~$500 instruments, unless I already had that one nice instrument and just wanted something fun to mess around with, in which case I'd buy one ~$500 instrument and a ~$1000 amp / pedals / whatever.

If it were me and knowing my bass/amp scenario (two great, but low end Yamahas and an 85lb Peavey back breaker), I'd go online at GC and get the Yamaha 1000ma and Markbass CMD JB player school 200w 1x15 amp -both used- that I've been lusting over.

Since it's. It my cash or life, get what makes you happy. It's nice to be able to focus on tone and playability without worrying about price (I typically am stuck in a low ceiling for my gear).
